My little 83 has emission stuff that I don't know if it can be removed. I have already taken the smog pump off since I do not need the emission stuff on it here. Its the black box that sits on the passenger side fender that I was wondering if I could remove it with out causing any problem? What is it for besides emissions if anything? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you don't need it to pass emissions tests, remove it all if you want. Especially on an 83. They are not important. Newer cars the only real problem you have with removing it is the check engine light.

Only thing I would add is to check with local police or government transportation office...or whomever is in authority...

I took my air pump off after the bracket broke a long time ago and didn't think about it much...I couldn't find the bracket anyway...several years later I got pulled over by the Ministry of Transportation in a random spot check...they gave me a $365 fine for not having the OEM pump (without rebuild or other information to say why the pump was missing)...

I went to court after spending about $150 to find a replacement (not OEM) to have the fine reduced...they dropped it to $0 but it still scared me enough....so always check before removing something that has to do with emissions...they are very serious about it even if the vehicle is older...

In Canada they can be very touchy about it...

The 'black box' is likely the ignition module. It makes the coil fire. I think you gotta leave it in.

So far the only casualties are the idiot light but i am buying some gauges to fix that problem. I am not cutting wires unless I have no choice. Just got to plug up vacuum leaks.

I took everything out of mine and the black box u talk about holds ur "computer" in addition to what looks like 3 vacuum sylanoids may not be exactly what they called mine are not even connected and a black round plastic puck with 3 spouts on it anyway only thing u seem to need is the computer and the vacuum advance on distributor and pcv. just my experience with my current build

The 'black round plastic puck' is the vacuum amplifier. Believe it or not, it as an actual mechanical amplifier. The small vacuum signal from the port on the carburetor is fed to the amplifier and used to diddle with the valve feeding manifold vacuum to a larger diaphragm. The larger diaphragm in turn diddles with the vacuum signal applied to the EGR valve.
So, the small vacuum signal is used to operate a larger valve ... amplified.

Does anyone know what the sylanoids looking things are for
