electrical problem

So the other day im driving home from work and i start hearing a whining click that slows and speeds up with the rpm of the engine. My battery gauge is shaking, and the battery light dims on and off. I drove it like this for sometime because of no time from work. Then today it wouldn't start at all, so i cleaned the terminals and she started up, i let her run for a couple of minutes and then shut her off and now im back to square one, wont start, Nothing. Like somebody took the battery out of her.

Problems:
-whining click noise under the dash, that changes with engine rpm.
-battery gauge shaking, battery light dims on and off

What ive tryed:
-cleaning terminals, she started once, and not again

bad alternator or voltage regulator maybe? take them to a auto parts store and have them tested

With a volt meter connected to the posts of the battery it should have approx 12 volts. Turn the key on and retest the voltage on the posts still should have 12 volts if not then the battery or the alternator is at fault. Assuming that nothing works , headlights ,radio inst lights. IF you still have 12 volts still holding the voltmeter black lead on neg batt POST move the positive lead to the other end of the positive cable if no voltage then cable is bad. If not continue until you find the voltage loss. Hope this helps.
