My 88 Ranger GT recently had a bizare situation happen. The battery created a short internally and ended up burning lightly some wires. I checked everything and all works except no fuel! I even replaced relays, checked the inertia switch, checked power everywhere, fuses included, but still haven't pulled the wires at the pump to check. Everything was fine with the truck up until the freak incident with the battery. I've never seen anything like this in my nearly 50 years on earth!!!! The battery was totally dead so I went to put a charger on it and it sparked like I had crossed the connections, which I didn't. Then the battery got REALLY hot, swelled up and some wires in the engine compartment started smoking. I pulled the cables off as fast as I could. I bought a manual for the ruck and traced wires for days and still can't find anything. Even the fusible links are still good. You don't think the main pump could have burned out or something that fast do you? I AM TOTALLY STUMPED!!!!! I would have climbed under the truck already, but I have a seriously bad back from a firefighting accident that really makes it hard to get under there. ANY IDEAS??????? Thank you for any help you can give!!!

I would start at the fuel pump relay. Check to make sure the relay is grounded, is recieving power from the PCM, has a power source to send to the fuel pump, and finally, that you have ground through the fuel pump itself. If you have ground through the pump, you can power it to make sure the pump will run. If something in the battery caused wires to start smoking, I would be concerned with a fried PCM.

Something I should have added, it turns over fine, has spark, everything I checked works, just no fuel pressure. I had gotten a very small amout of fuel and heard what sounded like the low pressure pump. When you mentioned the computer(ECM), I really worried! How do I figure out on the relays which wire or post goes to what?

I had my 86 which has 93 wiring in it had a loose connection in the main line on the fuse box.The fuel pump worked when it ran or parked but not when it turned over.Took a while to find that.

Does the relay click when you turn on the key?Did you check your fuses under the hood and in the car with a test light.Did you check the safety switch on the passenger side to see if it needs resetting?

I believe you can bypass the fuel pump relay using the EEC-IV connector using a jumper wire.

For what it's worth, .....

My 88 2.9, when I did the body off restoration,

group of 3 connectors on the dr side inside fender (near the ign coil)

the large white wire in one of the connectors was spastic after we re-installed everything.

Guess what group that wire belongs to?? your right, fuel pump and gauge stuff (everything that goes into the top of the tank).

cleaned the connections and made sure the wire pins actually made contact... Poof, fuel pump has been working great ever since.

Now If I could only keep transmissions in the truck :(
