I have an 88 ranger 2wd manual with a 2.9 v6. So on my way home from school the other day is when i noticed a noise coming from behind the rear seat that sounds like a wire is arcing. I tore out the rear speakers and that wasnt it so i took the seat out and it has to be coming from a wire that comes from the front of the truck under the carpet and goes through a hole in the floor near the rear into a cluster of wires and they are over the gas tank. Im guessing i have to drop the tank or pull off the bed to get to them? Ideas? Thoughts on what this could be?
Thanks,
Dan

that doesn't sound like a factory wire, and i've never been able to hear a 12v wire arcing out while driving, you would smell it and see smoke if it was.

find out where the wire comes from under the hood. make sure it has a fuse installed

i had bought a new 2004 Forester. within 200 miles, i started to hear an "arcing noise" from the center console. no smoke, no smell at all also began to have intermittent shifting problems with the auto tranny. called the dealer and they thought i was hearing things as well. when they inspected it, they found a 12 volt wire that went to the tranny had lost some of it's insulation and was arcing across to the sheet metal around the console.
you can have arcing without the smell or smoke, just the sound.
