I couldn't shift into 4 WD, light came on but it wasn't in 4WD. Pushed button again and light went of now it won't do any thing. Can hear clicking from modual under seat. I think I need the electric shift motor for my transfer case. I haven't done the test yet to be sure. My question is NAPA has a shift motor new for $100 and rebuilt for $74 but they don't have the ground wire or the magnetic sensor. Can I use the sensor off my old motor? I tried cleaning up the armature on my shift motor and it didn't make any difference. Couldn't get the plastic cover off 1 screw broke off so I gave up.

You might have the shattered bushing problem, so yeah, the cover really should come off so you can clean it up. There is also a reset button on the module.

I was going to put a new one on but wasn't sure about the sensor and ground because they are not on the one at NAPA. Going to check the power to the shift motor later to make sure the problem is in the shift motor.

couple things to try to see if its the motor it doesnt sound like it is but spray the crap out of it with wd40 and knock it with a hammer not so hard you break it but enough to free it up if there is a bunch of crud in there. Why i dont think its a motor is when my 94 motor was out i had no light nothing. until i replaced it.

The ground wire and magnetic sensor are easily removed from the wire harness on your existing motor. You need a small pick, or just a paper clip. Take the paper clip, straighten some of it out, then bend the end of it into a very small "L" shape (the short leg should be about the thickness of a penny). You'll need pliers to do this.

Looking at the motor harness plug (after you unplug it), you'll see everything is black plastic except for the red circle that surrounds the center pin. This red circle pops out. Remember what orientation it is in, so you know how it goes back in. Stick the paper clip in by the outer diameter of the red circle, and then turn the paper clip so the L-hook grabs the red part, and pull it out. Then you can easily push the pins out for the sensor and ground wire. Just remember where they go!

When I did this, I got most of my info from these links:

I ended up breaking my sensor apart trying to fix mine when it broke, so I got another motor/sensor from the junk yard for $20. I still took that one apart so I could replace the bushing (I figured it was probably getting ready to break apart anyway, at it was). I snapped off all 3 screws, so I had to drill them out & re-tap the holes. Replaced the bushing, and it has been working great ever since. Not bad for $20.

I got a shift motor from a scrap yard today. I was going to take it apart but it looked like the screws were going to break on tis one too so decided to try it with out going through it and it works good. $28.00 is better than $75 to $100. I'll take it off when the weather is better to clean it up and grease the gear. Thanks for the input.
