Electric Fan.

I have a 88 Ranger XLT 2wd.
I'm getting ready to get an Electric Fan from SummitRacing.com
I read about installation.
It says stuff about a fan clutch.
I don't believe mine has one.
When the engine is on, the fan Speed varies directly by RPM.
When the engine is off, the fan will not spin freely.
So I'm not sure what that means as far as the clutch.
Just need a little bit of explaining.
 
Sounds like the clutch is bad...locked up. As far as the e-fan goes...many have stated that it will gain you little to nothing...so ask yourself...is it worth the time and $200 dollar price for maybe 5hp? I'd say just replace the fan clutch.
 
I'm not doing it for the HP.
So I geuss the clutch would
be the best decision.

im happy with my electric fan. Keeps my truck cool wether I have a big load, offroading with high revving slow moving situations. I like the way the throttle is faster responding without the stock fan. It definatly gets up the rpm's quicker. I like it a bunch, many others here hate it. To each his own
 
if i had a chouice i would be runing a mechanical driven fan. like others have said tho, to each there own
 
There are no reasons to go to an e-fan. Matter of fact, you will loose cooling capacity of the mechanical fan. Make sure your fan clutch is doing ok.

why havent I lost any and ive been running one for like a year now?
 
What have you been going by? Your dummy temp gauge? All he is saying: is that a mechanical fan has the capacity to cool higher temps more quickly.

A mechanical fan will always have a higher capacity than an e-fan! Chevy is the only truck with an e-fan, and the e-fan is replaced with a mechanical fan
if you buy a towing option on the 1500 series, and the 2500 & 3500 series only have a mechanical fan!

But, it's only human nature to try and justify throwing your money away on an e-fan.......
 
no, I have an actual temp sensor in the upper radiator hose. Tells the exact temp so your "dummy temp guage" theory is wrong. A mechanical fan may have a higher cooling capacity when you start to overheat but my e fan never lets my motor get hot enough to were it cant cool it down lol.
 
In addition to the higher cooling capacity, the mechanical fan/fan clutch is much more reliable than the e-fan.
 
I'm gonna get a new clutch for the fan.
Then from there I'll decide if I want and E fan or not.
 
The e fan gives you the ability to shut the fan off if you don't need it. That is the only real advantage. Most people don't ever have a reason to shut their fan off.
A properly working fan clutch won't use a considerable amount of power. An improperly working fan clutch will still cool the engine.
 
I just installed an Efan, I put it in because im doing an engine swap and fan clearance would be an issue, and so installed it before the swap to make sure it will work and check for bugs/issues with it. I like it, I find I get quicker warm up times, and the engine seems to run abit better, also I think I have more power but it could be in my head.
 
well it all comes down to its your rig so run what makes you happy. I have no cooling issues no matter what I do with my truck. The rpm's climb faster with this fan and im happy with it. Free's up some room under the hood, little bit quicker in the rpm's.
