New old member, could not remember I log in name or old email address so I re-registered.

I have a weird problem with my 2002 Ranger 4L.

When I start the truck the doors lock randomly. Not every time. It happens about once or twice each day. Or, not at all. Nothing else seems to be malfunctioning.

Move the key to "start" and as the engine starts the doors lock. Don't know if it happens as I release the key back to "run" or while it is still in start. But, if I were to guess it is when I release the key back to the run position. If it is at night, the light flash just like you were locking the doors from outside with the door lock fob.

Any ideas about what is going on??? :dunno:

What do you have for an alarm/keyless entry?

My keyless entry is the stock system that came with the truck. Nothing after market, just what Ford sent it home with.

I figured it was probably the factory stuff. My Buddy has an Explorer (98) that randomly locks and unlocks the doors, even when it's not running. We believe it is the RAP module (Remote Anti-theft Personality). I don't know where it is located on a Ranger, but I would guess behind the stereo. Here is a rundown of what to do for an Explorer.

Just to close this out.
The battery in the truck was the one it came with in October 2001. Decided I should replace it because of its age. Took the old one out and went to Ford for a new Motorcraft (12 years on the original).

Put the new one in and the problem went away. Don't know if the Cabin Control Module reset when the battery was removed or the old battery was so weak that during start it caused the module to send out weird commands. In any event the new battery fixed the random door locking problem.

Well, in a few weeks to a couple of months you will see if it is not fixed. I have a few friends with Ranger who had the same darn problem. The Ford dealer out here told them it was common and not to worry about it.....unless you get locked out of the car....lol. Two friends put new batteries in and the problem went away and then came back. The other guy did nothing and it went away one day after he stopped for gas and then went through a car wash. He said when he got home his wife asked him to go get bread and he went out to the Ranger started it up and noticed it was back to normal....just so strange!!!!!

Straycat,
Time will tell. It has been over two weeks since I changed the battery and a trip to CA and back. Problem has not recurred. Will keep my fingers crossed.
