Dampeners can be removed. They make great paper weights.

There is a shaft behind the shift motor that you can turn with pliers to set the t-case gear. There is a diagram stamped into the case that tells you which gear is which.

The case will not jump out of gear if you hammer on the gas.

You don't need to seal anything if you remove the motor.

thanks!! i posted a ?? in the transmission forum to,maybe somebody can help with that.

The shaft that sticks out is basically triangular in shape.

I've seen guys drive a small socket onto it with a hammer and weld it in place on the shaft then keep a ratchet handle or short "Breaker bar" to turn it handy.

I've also seen someone weld a 1/2" thread hex nut onto the shaft and
simply keep a lug wrench handy to shift it.

Kind of a pain to get under it and shift it all the time though. That's what I did last summer till I finally fixed my shift motor....for the cost of di-electric grease and a scoth-brite pad.

But yes It can be shifted that way with no problems. Mine did jump in a neutral though last summer. I was on some pretty rough terrain.

Good point...yes, the case can jump from LO to neutral if there is a lot of impact on the drivetrain, but this is rare. And if this happens there is not any damage. It's not like it'll jump from HI to LO when going down the highway at 60MPH.
