Need some education on which 4L OHV Rangers/Explorers have or do not have EGR valves. And what needs to be changed to add an EGR to one that does not have it.

Thanks, Ed

Depends on the years, as well as what state they were sold in when new.

And you would have to change the computer(it runs the EGR system), as well as intake and exhaust manifold.

If you check on-line auto parts stores and look for a Ford 4.0l EGR valve most will have an "application" page where it will tell you what years used that EGR valve.
If you live in a state that requires an EGR system then just hit the wrecking yards, all the Ford 4.0ls will have an EGR system you can scavenge parts from.

Thank Ron,

I was asking more along the lines of an engine swap. Like if I were to buy a used engine. I needed to know just how important it would be to get a "like" engine. It sounds like it would be good to get a match; but, the condition of the used engine would be more important since I would have the old parts to swap out.

I have another question along the same line. In the "olden" days some engine cranks were different between standard and auto transmissions. Pilot bearing and no pilot bearing and sometime even boss or no boss for the bearing. Do you have to worry about that with the 4L OHV engine? :dunno:

Thanks, Ed

Yes, if you now have an EGR system then swap to EGR engine, but you could swap with non-EGR system engine and swap your EGR system to other engine, or visa versa.

Haven't read of any crankshaft issue with people swapping engines or Auto to Manual trans swaps having that issue.
I believe in '97 the 4.0l crankshaft was changed to an 8 bolt flywheel/flexplate mount, '96 and earlier was 6 bolt.

I have a 1993 ranger with 4.0 on the east coast, they did not come with EGR. They have a Bung on the Header, but its factory sealed. MIne has a/c power steering and all that, but its an ext cab XL model.

For the most part EGR was a CARB state thing on the 4.0. From 95 to the end of the OHV they all had EGR, but the early years and the SOHCs only got it in CARB states (California and PA after 2002, and even in PA it was only the Explorers).

The exhaust manifolds were the same, the non-EGR one just has a plug in the hole.

Mine is a 99 from Hawaii. Came from the factory with no EGR. The hole on the exhaust manifold is plugged. And my intake has no hole for it at all.
