Got the code off a checker for the EGR flow insufficient, should i go out and buy the EGR valve right away or try to clean it out if so what's the best way to clean it? Not too sure what to do, i need it for work but the man said i shouldn't drive it too much cause it burn up alot of Sh*t any ideas on what i should do?

99.99999% of the time, that code is a faulty DPFE sensor.

Little box on the intake with a connector and two silicon hoses to it. Two 8mm bolts.

http://www.tomco-inc.com/Tech_Tips/ttt34.pdf

Read tips 34, 35, 36 if memory serves me.

You won't hurt a thing driving it for hundreds of miles like that. Might notice poorer mpg (doubt it) or a little surging at steady speeds. Usually get that before it trips the CEL.

The DPFE typically fails because the sensing diaphragm inside gets crudded up from moisture, often due to a lot of short trips. Like me, 4 miles to work, 2 round trips a day.

They are available at any AP store, but I'd see if they give a warranty. Carquest honored their warranty for me (one year) when it failed.

Do inspect those 2 hoses. They are special and it matters which is which. One is slightly smaller, don't recall if it is Sig or Ref. Read the TOMCO tips.

awesome thanks! my check engine light came on 3 days ago but ive been getting like 10-11.5 mpgs anyways you think this might be a problem with why i get that low of mpgs or could something else be hurting it as well

Earl, do you think this could be my problem? My 93 3.0 sorta surges at a low idle. The tach dances between 750rpm-1000rpm. At start up it goes straight to 1750rpm then slowly works its way back down. and i'm getting worse, and worse fuel mileage. Also seems like since i bought it it has had a little loss of power. Before i could chirp 2nd if i wanted to, now it won't do it. I dont know if this could be related or not. any help would be great.

You can allways pull the egr and clean it be careful not to damage the diaphram with any harsh cleaner make sure to get a good gasket first to put it back together. soaking in carb cleaner worked pretty good for me until I was able to find a cheap one on ebay.

definitely need to get my fixed or cleaned i have a feeling it needs more than a cleaning im getting something pretty low a little under half tank with 90 miles on it 20 gal tank thats horrible anything quick and simple to do to help until i can get it into a shop??

Make sure u clean the valve pipe with throttle body cleaner. I the same problem and took the egr valve out and cleaned out the pipe and the code cleared. mine was really hard to get off but once i did it was pretty easy

thanks rangerskate... did yours get really bad mileage too? or could that deal with something else?

on my 2.8 l i plugged the intake side with a rag and fired the motor off and did not get any exhaust of of the egr port the ports on the manifold and heads were plugged so I pulled the intake off and cleaned them out and put it back together and works good now. Maybe someone here coul say wether you can do the same plug the intake side as not to suck anything into the intake and fire it up for a bit to blow any carbon out of the exhaust port before you put it back together. I know nothing about the 3.0 but might help from it plugging up when you put it back together

common

i think these egr issues are common to this engine. i had the same code a year ago, was ignorant to egr so i went and replaced the valve itself, put seafoam through, carb cleaner in throttle body, etc...nothing worked until i replaced the DPFE sensor. problem gone... until...

about a month ago, CEL came on.. same code, again! did more research, decided it's just got to be carbon build up somewhere. today i took vacuum lines off and blew out with compressed air. i tried to get that entire tube out. the one that connects to bottom of egr, and exhaust manifold, with the two tubes going to DPFE.. couldn't get the bottom nut turned connecting to exhaust manifold. i wanted to get the entire thing off, to blow that out with air, or maybe solvent. might try again with some kind of creative way to get to it.

ANYWAY, i just blew out the vacuum lines and cleared code by disconnecting battery. and truck runs MUCH better, just by doing that. however, i don't think the problem is truly fixed because nothing really came out of the vacuum lines i blew out. i'm thinking the computer will throw the code again here soon.

check out www.tom-co.com, they're entire ''Ford EGR Systems" tech tips was very insightful, and made the whole system a lot less intimidating. one of these days i'd like to remove entire intake manifold, and all egr components to inspect for carbon buildup.

i wouldn't normally put so much effort into it, but my egr issues REALLY affect my engine performance, and the pinging drives me crazy.

how'd you get that pipe off? the bottom nut is in a no fun at all spot, and rusted badly.

Some 3.0 Ranger owners have reported replacing their DPFE's two and three times, so it's not out of the realm of possibility that your year-old DPFE has failed and that's why the code was thrown.
