EGR & DPFE Question

My CEL comes on but only after I drive for about 5 minutes on the freeway.

If I disconnect the battery (to reset the light) I seem to be able to drive all over in stop and go trafffic and the light doesn't come on...but if I go up on the freeway and drive for a few minutes at 55+...."bing" light comes on and stays on until I reset it. P1040 (or whatever the EGR code is) I've had it checked each time at Autozone.

My question is about the DPFE sensor. If the DPFE was bad wouldn't my CEL come on right away when I started my truck? Does the fact that my CEL doesn't come on for a while mean the problem is with something else? Or could it still be the DPFE?

Looking for other people's DPFE success stories...did you light come on right away? Thanks for the insight.

There are several ways the DPFE can fail, and yes - I've seen one fail that did not show up in the KOEO testing process. Miserable little creatures they are. If you can find a Mitchell manual for your '98 at the library, it should have a step by step procedure for narrowing the source of the code down before you replace anything.

thanks fastpakr,

I've read some other posts now too. At first I started narrowing down to clogged exhaust tube, this seems common and makes sense, maybe flow was sufficient at slower speeds..but on the highway the clog was just a little too much and tirggered the code for insufficient flow.

But then I found a post from a guy who had his CEL stay off for 53 miles before it would come back on...it ended up being his DPFE! Jeez..so much for my theory.

I've never heard of a Mitchell Manual...only Haynes and Chilton? I'll look into it, would like to know before I start throwing money at it.

Thanks again.

The MIL lights up after the PCM sees two consecutive faults, so it dosen't
necessarily come on immediately.
All your symptoms point to a defective DPFE, especially if the vehicle
has some miles on it......

Thanks Runnin' good to have your vote and good into to know about the 2 times fault for a CEL.

I've got the new DPFE and it will go in tomorrow.

Well I replaced the DPFE and I think I've logged enough miles now without the CEL illuminating to confidently say that was the problem. Runnin' you were right!

Keep fingers crossed.......

Glad you fixed it, Big6.:icon_thumby:

Like Fastpacr said, DPFE's are miserable little
creatures and they fail on a regular basis.
Must be from the heat they're subjected to....?
