I disabled the EGR system on my truck and now need the correct size cap to blockoff the EGR tube bung on my headers. I know some headers did come with this cap as not all trucks were equipped with EGR valves. Does anyone know the size of the blockoff cap? :icon_confused:

What is the reason for blocking off the EGR? I'm asking because I'm interested in doing this if it will not throw any codes. I've done it on some of my other vehicles before with no ill effects and wondering what the results are for the Ranger.

Is the cap not something that could be fabricated fairly easily?

It will throw codes. It's illegal (Federal). And you will see no benefit from the modification over a working system.

Hint: study what it does, and WHEN. Any claim of power gains are FALSE because it's ALWAYS closed at WOT.

If it works leave it alone. If it doesn't fix it.

I know what it does and I know the negative effects of it as well, and performace isnt the reason.... And yes, it will throw codes. Just need to know what size the cap would be. I believe AllenD was the one who I remember reading that had the cap on his borla headers since he didnt have an egr. Happen to know the size AllenD?

Umm, all modern headers for the correct application come with EGR ports for EGR vehicles.

If you bought the wrong application, return it. EGR isn't necessarily the only difference. It might not even fit.

the guy has abviously fit his headers already, and doesnt care what the egr does he wants it gone. most headers fit the application withthe exception of application that arent stock, his header have egr bungs we know that he wants them gone. someone give himthe size of the cap. i need to know as well.

Ona side note what i might end up doing I did with my 2000 3.8 mustang headers, which had the oxygen recirculation bungs on teh headers. I took JB weld and the caps from some aerosol whipped cream cans. and fill them with the weld then stick em on let them dry. because its theaded expansion wont affect them and the plastic lid should melt right off. then you can grind it smooth.

They fit fine with the exception of the cat flange that most header manufacturers fail to get right with the 95 and up OHV. Im not trying to have a discussion on what are the pros and cons of an egr equipped system, just wanted to know if anyone knew the exact size off hand as I know people have installed headers with an egr bung on a truck that wasnt equipped with an egr from the factory and used a cap or blockoff fitting of some sort. And yes, there are late model rangers that didnt come with an egr straight from the factory. I know its bigger than 1/2", but thats the biggest my local fastenal has in stock. Anything bigger I would have to prepay to order, and Im not sure what size I need...

This probably won't help, but it's what I used. (If I had good threads to work with, I'd hold out to get the exact matching cap or plug.)

I used a pipe fitting end cap. I honestly can't remember if it was 1/2", but I think 3/4" (3/4" National Pipe Thread NPT female threaded pipe cap). The threads did NOT fit exactly, but I used some metal epoxy to seal, and haven't had a problem since (many years ago). I think I remember having to slightly grind down the threads on the inside of the cap to get it to fit over the exhaust pipe stub.

Thanks Feellnfroggy and CraigK, I appreciate your help. I'll just order the 5/8" and 3/4" NPT caps both and go from there. I'll post my results...

on my '88 2.3 i had a brass pipe plug screwed in where the egr tube once hooked up. had to put a steel hose clamp around it though due to the different expansion of the steel manifold and brass plug. this truck had a gutted converter and no emmisions equipment, 302 fuel injectors and a .030 overbore. had no driveabilty problems or check engine light. the newer stuff has alot more electronic garbage on them however. ive never seen a egr setup on a 4.0, california model maybe?

Yours is OBD I which isnt as sensitive as OBD II. The OBD II actually has a flow sensor to monitor how much is actually flowing and when it senses no flow it will pop a DTC. My truck isnt a california model, just how ford built them from the factory. Most, but not all, of the 4.0L OHVs Ive seen personally has them, but some of the SOHCs were hit and miss.

I don't know the size, I FOUND a plug in a bin of random fittings
I had (scrap brass) that fit perfectly.

I have no idea what that fitting was supposed to be,
it came with a bunch of stainless steel scrap I bought.

Probably the easiest way to make a plug is get the EGR tube
and nut off of any ford. cut off the tube and drive it out of
the nut then thread the ID of the nut to take a pipe plug.

I ended up gettin the 1/2" cap and dremeled out the inside to open it up some...5/8" was probably the actual size but I couldnt find it anywhere without ordering it, 3/4" was too big. This allowed me to push it on over the threads to seat it while I hit it with a hammer a few times....its on there pretty good soo Im just gonna go with that as I doubt its coming off. I must say, the truck sounds pretty good with the headers and a flowmaster 40...

The fitting is a rare 5/8 FLARE fitting and the tube is 1/2. I broke my egr tube and had to put a band-aid on it.
