Picked up a 96 ranger from a friend recently only to find out it needed emissions testing. Epic fail! Code was p0401. Here in the state of WA if your vehicle doesn't pass, you can get a cert saying you had a diagnostic done- that'll run ya 150! In an effort to save cash, I did some research online and figured I'd take a stab at replacing the egr valve. Ummmmm, yeah, I learned my lesson on shootin blindly in the dark! Now all I want to do is get it back together so I can get the cert, get it registered, and get er done! My issues are in an effort to make room for the mega wrench used to get the egr tube but off, I tried to loosen the ground screw to the EEC. It's stuck. Can't for the life of me find how to tighten it back up. Thought about snippen the ground wires and relocating it elsewhere. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Pictures of your issue would be helpful. Sometimes we can give much better answers if we can see the problem rather than just having a written description.

Also, your code is likely caused by the DPFE (EGR flow) sensor. Little black box at the end of two tube coming off the EGR pipe.

Yep what he said. That sensor is maybe @115 at a retail stealership but I found a factory part from a stealership in Michigan online for $61. U can go aftermarket cheaper but I like to keep it factory...

If you don't know what you are doing it will wind up costing you more in the long run. If you are not really sure take it into a shop. It's against the law in a lot of states to tamper with emissions. Just be careful, Bro.

Thanks guys. Yes, definitely kicking myself on this one. I'm a diehard diy'r when it comes to home remodeling, but learning to know what my limits are in the auto realm. Would like to try and get it back to square one so I can take it in and get the diagnostic done.

I'm with you, Bro. I can do a lot of things...but I won't mess with emissions. Got a few friends who got burned helping out other people at times and all it takes is to get caught doing something that you think is correct and then find out it was not done right or was illegal to do something to the emissions.

Ok so I took a picture w- my phone, but apparently I have to upload it elsewhere? Anyway the bolt I'm trying to work w- is to the right of the eec. The head seems to be hidden behind the firewall. There's a mysterious black panel about the size of an ipad to the right of that. The bolt appears to be a gound screw. My thought is to cut the ground wire and relocate it elsewhere, as I can't tighten or loosten the nut- just spins. Any suggestions on a good location? Or a good access point to grab the head of the ground screw? Done lots of searching and found nothing on how to get a hold of the head. Once this is done it's off to the shop, I swear!
