EcoBoost in a Ranger? How long before its done?

Frankly, I'd either want the 3.7 V6 from the mustang, or an ecoboost 4 cylinder like whats going into the Ford Explorers (230HP, 240 lb-ft), since either one will be a lot narrower than a V-type engine with a turbo hanging off each side....

I mean, if a 2.3 OHC Lima and a DOHC 2.3 were factory, and a Lima turbo swap is commonplace, I'd say the 2.0 Ecoboost seems a most rational option.

I don't know about the width being a huge factor (4v 4.6 V8 fits in a '98+ Ranger nicely) but the complexity of it would be the bummer for a swapper.

OEM though, I would think the Ranger buying public would eat up 3.7 and 2.0EB engines.

We already have a post on this subject. It will cost a lot of money and it won't be worth the cost unless you have a lot of money you don't or won't ever need, lol. A regular V8 swap is the better option. And then add a supercharger or a turbo kit and enjoy the cheaper swap.

there going to put and ecoboost 4 cyl in the ranger no news on the v6 the 4cyl would be pretty cool i think as long as its tuneable we'll see lol

Same goes for any modification.

And no, a V8 cannot be counted on to justify the cost. Probably the reverse is true.

That is the sucky part of a modified vehicle, part it out and maybe break even minus the time of breaking it down or sell it whole and lose money. You never will get out what you had in it.

There are a lot of people that won't buy anything that isn't stock, I see a loud exhaust... was it beat on? Mud tires... how long did they have to rock it it to get it unstuck? Engine swap... what the heck were they doing to need a bigger engine? How good did they do putting it in (and when did the last guy to work on something do anything right?) With a smaller purchasing pool the price goes down.

However I have no qualms about doing that myself because I know it wasn't beat on before I got it, I know how it was put in, and I know how it was treated after it was modified. I don't sell, so cost vs value doesn't really bother me. Some people smoke, some people drink... I play with my truck. Call it a living expense if you have to.

Yea , I guess that would be right. Me too!! I like to do my own stuff and I take very good care of my vehicals. My brother-in-law had a 2001 B4000 and he blew the motor at 120,000 miles and he told me when he did an older V8 mustang swap he spent a total of $800 for everything and even upgraded the tranny to a 5 speed. He did all the work himself and he really loved it until a buddy borrowed it to take his boat out and it got sunk in the Florida Keys one weekend. His buddy came back after a 2 day fishing trip and the truck was not there. He chained the trailer up to a tree and parked the truck near the ramp. It slipped out of gear (no parking brake on) and it rolled into the ramp area and went into about 12 feet of water and was completely submerged. Somebody went there at night to fish and backed out their boat and bumped into something (the truck). They got a spot light and saw what it was.
The park ranger that came out there called a tow company that evening and they could not contact my brother-in-law since he has an unlisted number and they were at a wedding party that night. The next afternoon he got notified and his buddy had called the cops to report the truck missing. He did not know the tag number of the truck....duh!!!!! So the neat little truck got ruined after a almost a day under water!!! He had insurance so that was a good thing for him. That was a neat looking truck. The work he did was really nice. I drove it a couple of times and was impressed with the the power.

I was not aware there was a thread on this supject already or I wouldnt have posted it.

I know lots of people who say a v8 swap isnt worth it either lol, I think its up to the person who wants to do it to determine if they think its worth it.

I agree im sure a v8 swap may be easier and cheeper but then again I do think it would be cool do brag your ranger sports an Ecoboost 3.5L V6 engine haha.

I don't know anything about the Ecoboost. What's the deal with it? Typically I'm afraid of anything with "Eco" in the name, reminds me of tree huggers and worthless garbage meant to save the rain forest and/or make farmers rich while burning up the world's food supply.

But I hear "365 HP at 5000 rpms and 420 lbs of torque at only 2500 rpms."
Doesn't sound too bad at all.

Twin turbo, direct injected V6. Very cool engine, they have torture tests of it on youtube.

wheres the other thread?

ecoboost swap will be same as any other.

i would wager cheaper in a few years. think about it...they are selling like hot cakes.:dunno:

they hotrodded this engine before it went production, theres data to make it easy.

pretty simple swap coming from a 150.

it might even take less time then the 6.5 swap.

Personally, I'd rather swap in the 6.7. To hell with this 3.5 EB. :thefinger:

I would like to see it done though. I give it 3 years until it shows up in a Ranger or a Mustang.

eb is neat....clear unladen economy winner.

time will tell if it is a turd or not.

If this truly is a bad-ass motor, they need to change it's name. "Ecoboost"?? It sounds like something a tree-hugging hippy would have in his Subaru Forester (with optional bicyle rack on top).

But if you can get so much power out of a 3.5 liter engine, why not?

You can get a supercharger for a 2.3L 4 banger that'll make it run with the stock 5.0's so why the hell would you go with a 5.0 that's gonna guzzle gas even when you're not on the hammer? Why put the extra weight of a V8 up front (in a vehicle that's already too front-heavy) when a screaming 4 cylinder will produce the same amount of power and they're a dime-a-dozen at the junk yard?

If this "Ecoboost" thing turns out to be a screaming little power-house, it'd be a good way to go because it would save a lot on gas under normal driving conditions, and you wouldn't have to have the weight of a V8 up front which will mess with your handling.

Somebody pointed out to me once, the old 2.3 weighs about the same as the old pushrod 5.0.

They are both fun engines, but the 5.0 has more torque... and can be supercharged too.

What would a supercharged 5.0 do to a Ranger? I mean besides twist up the frame and smoke the tires?

The rear end of mine ain't got enough weight on it to do much. One time a pigeon landed on the tail-gate in the middle of the winter and it's feet got frozen to the metal. When the pigeon tried to fly away the rear of the truck came off the ground. :icon_rofl:

Ok that didn't really happen but ... still, there ain't no weight back there.
