My credo
What's the worst that could happen?
Thinking about pulling my control module and replacing the three capacitors, but cannot find 16uf capacitors with low voltage -- in the 50 to 150 range.
I have pulled it once before, but did not replace them - I'm was not too confident in my soldering skills to maybe break something that wasn't broken.
I'm googling 16uf capacitors. I get lots of results but refining the search gives me nothing. It seems the higher voltage caps are physically too large. I did buy some from Amazon with a 450V rating but they are too large.

Anyone have any advice on what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks
R

Search on digikey or mouser. You'll find thousands of options. Both companies are ultra reliable American companies. I'm a digikey guy myself but I've used both.

What are the original ratings? If they're 16v, maybe go to 25v if you want a bit of extra reliability
EDIT:. You said they were 16uf, not 16v, so if they were 50v in the ECM, you could go to 100v, but I'd focus on getting high quality, high temp Automotive 50v caps.

I also tend to prefer Panasonic caps, but Nichicon is a close second. Oh, and look at the temperature rating. Get 105C caps. You'll probably also see some of this spec'd as "automotive". That can't hurt either

Digikey comes up a lot and I've seen Mouser. I admit I'm NOT even remotely knowledgeable about electronics, so any advice is welcome.
I think the caps in the PCM are 12V, but for sure are 16uf according to RonD in previous posts.

They are radial vs axial. Digikey has the latter with a 30 week wait time...ppphhhhttt

Unfortunately they're all aimed the wrong way

Any other photos? I'm trying to find that original thread. If anyone could point me at it that would be great, I can't seem to find it.

I'll be glad to help you find the right part, no problem.

Here's the thread that RonD and others responded to from me:

Okay....hold the door for a minute here.....
I think I made a serious error here. I assumed that RonD posted that they were 16uf, but maybe he was using that as just a reference and was not referring to the actual rating of the capacitor.
Re: I was looking for additional images and looked closely at this one:

Clearly...16V 47uf...WTF
Now I'm questioning my sanity. I wonder now if they are all the same or have different values?

EDIT: Found this at Digikey:;

Hehe, no worries, it's easy enough to get those numbers reversed, no biggie. I wanted to double check as 16uf is a very uncommon capacitance value but 16V is very common.

Anyway, here are a couple good options:

looks like you need 2 of these:

https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/panasonic-electronic-components/ECA-1EHG470C/2688671

and one of these:

There are other options of course, and sadly shipping will probably cost 3x what the parts cost (although that's why I use digikey, their shipping is very reasonable and ultra-fast. If you order it before 4pm it'll probably be on your doorstep in the morning unless you're in Alaska.)

If you have any more questions along the way, feel free to ask. I haven't worked on too many automotive ECMs but I used to recap computer motherboards every day, and now do old audio equipment and old computers several times a week, same process.

Oh, you may notice I chose a 25V cap for the 47uf. I think it was cheaper than the 16V and it certainly won't hurt anything, might even last a bit longer. ;)

Oh, and there's no absolute need to go with Digikey- the reason I do is that there are _so_ many counterfeits floating out there on ebay and elsewhere that I'll pay the few extra bucks to be certain I'm getting good quality parts.

EDIT:. Also buy extras. There's a price break if you buy 10. Good to have a few spares.

Got ten of each in my cart but having difficulty checking out with PayPal. Will try again a little later.
Again, thanks a bunch. (will probably post more questions when I get around to soldering and cleaning up the board.

I'm wondering if PayPal is caught up in this massive computer outage that's happening today. EDIT: yes they are.
