Eaton M90 SC

Hello. I do know what the basic job of an intercooler is. However I am no expert on the subject, I can assure you. But my friend works on turbocharged engines which are intercooled as well as some intercooled supercharged vehicles. And this is where I learned the very, very basics of what an intercooler does. And 6psi boost doesnt seem like nearly enough to require an intercooler. However, as someone who has dealt with cracked heads due to overheating, I did stress the need for a larger radiator, because, in very basic terms, more compression equals a larger, more forceful combustion. A larger, more powerful explosion will create more heat. And more heat is bad for heads.

It's actually more of a 'burn' than it is an 'explosion'...

A charge air cooler, what you are calling an intercooler, is put in place to cool the charge air, allowing you to run more boost before detonation occurs. Cooler air is also more dense, which allows you to inject more fuel, which yeilds more power.

A charge air cooler may not be required for 6psi of boost, but implementing one will allow you to make more power than if you didn't have one

My tires are stock size.

Ok, I'm going to wager your gearing is 3.73 from the factory. You could swap in some 4.10's and gain a little...not worth it IMO though

Are you needing more power for towing or something? Is your truck struggling?

Or are you just wanting some more power to burn some rubber?

Ya, am wanting more power for towing, and for pleasure :) Ya, everything is stock on my X. Considering it has 200,600 miles on the engine, I was looking for options for my next engine is why I'm looking things up on different sites that have 4.0 information..

mustang.com and v6power.net those guys have built and proven some awesome conversion kits for mounting both the m90 and the m112 to v6's both 4.0's and 3.8's. Alot of them do CNC design so it works out pretty well.

what do you plan on towing with a 91 explorer that exceeds it's towing capacity? Its not engine power that limits it ...... I used to tow a 21' travel trailer behind my 91 on a regular basis with my 3.73 and 31's and a slush box ..... weighed 4600 pounds all geared up.......

that being asked ........ good luck with forced induction project......

Oh ya? Have to check 'em out when I'm ready for that point, thanks!

Guess I was just thinking that the engine power was what limited the towing capacity...if I remember right, my husband said that wasn't the thing to worry about so ya, you're right on that mark lol.
Forced induction will be some time away now that i have engine troubles right now lol.

BTW .... mine was over 400K when I hydrolocked the engine. still had decent compression. burned a little oil. The original owner switched it to synthetic oil and never missed a 3000 mile oil change and put about 40K a year on it, I bought it in 2002 and beat the living hell out of it.

he said he replaced the heads at 250K

now that we have worked the whole charge air cooler dilemma, you know 87 octane is a thing of the past when you supercharge this, correct? I bet you'll end up running 91 in it, as 93 seems a bit like overkill.

400K miles? HOLY! Didn't think an engine could go that far lol. What year is yours?

I figured I'd have to start using a higher octane gas once the SC would be put in.

Intercoolers always help they just help MORE as boost increases.

it was a 91. it met it's early demise in the Spokane River.

Wow. I never thought an engine could go that far lol. So how'd it end up in the river?

Where on those sites, will I find what I am looking for? They are message boards, and with a ton of places I could search....

the trail crumbled from underneath me and I rode it 300 feet almost straight down into the river. would have down a 351 swap except I also sprung the frame.
