Hello. I do know what the basic job of an intercooler is. However I am no expert on the subject, I can assure you. But my friend works on turbocharged engines which are intercooled as well as some intercooled supercharged vehicles. And this is where I learned the very, very basics of what an intercooler does. And 6psi boost doesnt seem like nearly enough to require an intercooler. However, as someone who has dealt with cracked heads due to overheating, I did stress the need for a larger radiator, because, in very basic terms, more compression equals a larger, more forceful combustion. A larger, more powerful explosion will create more heat. And more heat is bad for heads.
It's actually more of a 'burn' than it is an 'explosion'...
A charge air cooler, what you are calling an intercooler, is put in place to cool the charge air, allowing you to run more boost before detonation occurs. Cooler air is also more dense, which allows you to inject more fuel, which yeilds more power.
A charge air cooler may not be required for 6psi of boost, but implementing one will allow you to make more power than if you didn't have one
