There once was a time where pickup trucks were made only as a regular cab, a front seat only configuration that sat two, maybe a third with a squeeze. These days it seems that almost everyone wants a crew cab, an extended cab, or a king cab. Call it what you want. It seats more. It has, in fact, become the prevailing trend.

i was wondering when this had caught on. When were the first crew cabs introduced? When did they become more popular?

Earliest ones I remember were the International Harvester in the 50's, soon followed by the Big Three. Crew cabs are for guys that didn't pull out in time.

Extended cab is when you have stuff you want to keep dry or locked up if you have an uncovered bed

Crew cab is when you have more people to haul than cargo

I imagine crew cabs became popular, REQUIRED, when kids/people could no longer ride in the bed without seats and seat belts

Oh very good! The Travelette is a sub-model of the International Harvester series of light-duty pickup trucks that was produced from 1957 to 1975. The Travelette was the first factory-production, 6 passenger, crew-cab pickup truck, made by any United States manufacturer.

Anyone know when the crew cabs began to out sell regular cabs?

Interesting. I was kind of thinking along those very same lines.

4wd too.

I think crews began outselling actual pickups in the early 2000's...when ford introduced the supercrew...before that only 3/4 and 1 tons got full crew cabs.

An oldie but a goodie! Wouldn't that look great fully restored? Do you think the Ranger was the first best selling extended cab?

I imagine most crew cabs were originally sold for commercial use. Construction companies needing to carry crews out to remote job sites, municipal work crews, etc.

Ford and Dodge came out with an extended cab in 73 and both were quite popular. The crew cab was already available also. The Ranger Super Cab was a no brainer since they were so small inside. I would still love to see a Ranger Crew Cab like was sold in Mexico and South America. I had an really nice 03 4x4 F250 Crew Cab Lariat that was like driving an ocean liner in tight parking lots. Loved the truck, hated the 6.0L Power Stroke.

We're both wrong. The 74 MY pickup was the first for the SC but like all vehicles it was sold in 1973
