Simply put, yes it's for emission purposes. And must not be that beneficial, since the new 2.3 duratec isn't dual plug. So my answer is dual plug is for emptying your wallet quicker when it's time to change plugs.
it's weird but works... it might cost twice as much to replace plugs but they'll last twice as long and give you a stronger spark than with a distributor. I'm only using half the plugs on my turbo engine but the same parts, I'd rather have it than TFI...
Oh, I agree, i'd rather have coil packs than a dist, but 2 plugs per cylinder is a waste if you ask me. And really i'd rather just have it set up like pretty much every other distributorless engine with a coil pack per cylinder and do away with plug wires all together.
If i ever get started on my turbo motor im going to do like you've done and run the icm with one coil pack on the 4 plug head. probably have to pick ur brain a bit when that time comes.
no prob, if you keep the stock harness it's really simple (cut off the connector for the passenger side coil pack and ground the outer two wires that went to the connector), the only thing I haven't figured out how to do is get the stock tach to work...
keep the stock ranger harness? i was planning on running the turbo harness, I have the whole car. And then wiring in the ICM and using part of the ranger harness to plug the coil pack in.
it's WAY easier to just use the ranger harness, everything is already in the right spot, just change/remove the appropriate wires and go, if done right it'll look factory, mine wasn't done right so I have some random wires floating around... but not too bad as I've seen worse. There's things you can do to make it even easier like use the stock ranger throttle body.
is the VAM and MAF plug the same? wasn't it a pita to pretty much re-pin the whole harness and swap all the connectors? maybe i'm missing something here.
the connectors are different for VAM and MAF I think, my truck didn't have a MAF, but the wires most likely go to the same place
everything is in the same place or close enough, does the '94 use a MAP sensor? if so it's the same thing as the baro sensor on the turbo engine just take the hose off. between my '86 and '90 engine the only different connector was for the throttle body and I wish I had put the ranger throttle body on the turbo engine. The thing that makes it a pain to swap the TC harness on is the computer and relays and such are in completely different places. On my truck there were only about 5 wires added, a couple splices and about 5 wires removed at the computer.
