I was looking at a dual mass planetary flywheel on the SACHS website:

http://www.zf.com/brands/content/en/sachs/products_sachs/clutches_sachs/dmf_sachs/dmf_SACHS.html

Does anyone know if someone makes one for the Ranger (1999) and if it can even be used on it without causing problems?

It's supposed to 'quiet' the ride and give some improved fuel economy.
I'm planning on replacing my clutch system soon and I am curious if I should convert to this DM flywheel or just resurface and possibly 'balance' the old one.

volkswagens use this design and they don't seem to have any problems.

but on the other hand.. the solid chunk of steel that 90% of the other cars/trucks have been using has been working fine for ages

Gotcha Brutus. It would be quick and easy to just leave it alone.
I'm just curious if its worth trying to get a couple more MPG's out of it.

engineering^2. What do you think the investment recovery time would be? If you get 2mpg more, how much is that worth, and how many miles will it take to recover that investment?

My dad had one in one of his work trucks (a mid 90's Super Duty) and had nothing but heartburn with it. :annoyed: :bawling: :pissedoff:
STAY FAR FAR AWAY!!!!

Good to know. I think I'll take the easy route and just have it turned.

Yeah. The truck spent over a month in the shop. Stick with a conventional flywheel. You'll be happier in the long run.

Dual mass flywheels suck, you can get a replacement "old style" single flywheel for the powerstrokes.
