So I swapped from a 2.3 5 speed to a 4.0 auto trans from a 94 explorer. But my ranger driveshaft does not fit into the explorer transmission. The connection on the new tranny is smaller in diameter than the connection on my stock driveshaft.... ?? What?

It's because you swapped from a manual trans to an automatic.

You'll need to find a driveshaft from an automatic-equipped Ranger that is the same body type (wheelbase) as yours, which should fit right in.
