1989, 2.9 4x4 xlt bronco II . all stock that I know of.

I figured out through guidance from here that I need to repair or replace my drive shaft. the cv looking joint is broke right at the rear end. Any info would be great , threads etc. I don't know what they call the style that I have. I am going to remove it today. Thanks guys.

The bolts are 12mm 12 point that hold the driveshaft in and the factory uses yellow locktite... which can be a real bear to break free. You'll want to use either blue or red locktite upon reassembly.

As far as the driveshaft goes, if it's got big tulip looking CV boots on it, it's a CV shaft. Junk. Throw it away. If you're looking for a cheap replacement, I'd look at some local junkyards under the Bronco IIs, some of them came with U-joint driveshafts from the factory and others got a U-joint replacement shaft. Or you can buy a new one, but depending on where you get a new one it can run between $250 and $370 (all the new ones offered seem to be U-joint shafts).

I replaced that cv style with a drive shaft from broncoIIgraveyard.com. Havent had problems since. Shaft and shipping was 194. I did get a military discount though.

Just had our replacement drive shaft repaired at a company called "Fleet Pride". I mentioned Bronco II and the guy gave me a look and said "We used to sell so many replacement drive shafts for those? We kept them as normal stock for years". (They custom make all drive shafts.)

Denny's Driveshaft in Rochester, NY can do up one with a great warranty. And I think Fleet Pride can still custom make one as well for a reasonable cost. (about 280 to 360 is the usual range).

The parts stores are getting back to replacement shafts with the CV's. Cardone made mine---but it blew out the rear u-joint. We just had it fixed. (been using a junk yard CV shaft for about a year)

Elutheros, this is great ! This mod is forward thinking for me as I would like to lift mine as well. Thank you sir !:icon_cheers:

I am a little hesitant to trust hill billy's drive shaft build there, but that might just be because he can't spell.
