would it hurt to use dot 4 brake fluid

In my manual, I read that only DOT3 can be used or the whole system needs to be replaced, if I read right

No - you're thinking of Dot 5, silicon based fluid. Dot 4 can be used with no problem. It's rated for higher temperatures, but for normal driving you'll be fine with 3 or 4.
