Ok so im having another problem with the ranger. I just put on a new tps and fuel filter. I thought the tps was bad cause it had all the symptons as a bad tps would. I got it to run right again and the idle is sittinn at 2300 rpms and i have turned the idle screw and adjusted everything. And today well i was driving I went to give it a little gas and it bogged down and dropped to 300 rpms and i let off and i had to stop before it started to run fine again. It has been doing this for the last couple of weeks. Then i was at my buddys house and he said that there was white smoke coming out of the oil filler cap. im fed up with this and i wwant it to run again. This is my only car so im tryin to get it to run right just had a complete tune up not long ago. I took it to my local parts store and tried to get some codes but none could be found. Also after i found smoke coming out of the filler cap the truck would crank off but would not start. Also got a new o2 and new cats. Anything wold help please!!!!:icon_confused::pissedoff:

id do a compression test. a little bit of smoke from the crank is OK, a lot indicates excessive blow by.

look for dead cylinders, all of the cylinders should be within a few PSI of each other, a cylinder that is much lower than the rest of them indicates that something is wrong.

If you have white smoke as your friend said, you may have a blown headgasket, intake manifold gasket, or cracked head.

Alright well im going to do a compression check and im going to check everything over again. I guess it was just a little smoke

ok went out and started the ranger and it had a little toruble starting cold like it normally does. But when it fired it idle fine and the thottle responded on spot. What could cause it to act up only when it is warm i just got new intake gasket, and i checked all vaccum lines. Im really wanting to know what is wrong. I also checked compression and it was good it was equal all between. Any other ideas guys?:icon_confused:

You seem uncertain of your symptoms; I am having a really hard time following exactly what is wrong with your truck. I would say hard starting when it's cold is a problem/symptom (are you having the pump the accelerator to allow more air into the cylinders?), not just when it's warm as well. Could be anything from too much fuel off the bat (like bad FPR, or an eletrical sensor that's out of whack causing a overly rich mixture) to the pressure not being up to spec/not priming and vise versa. There is a lot of possibilities.

And no codes could mean 2 things - either they couldn't pull them or they got the pass code (11s). You might start by pulling them yourself so you know what's what, look for EEC-IV diagnostics in the technical library.

Ok this is wat is wrong with my ranger. First off its a 89 ranger 5 speed with a 2.9l. I just started having a surging, cuttin out problem it runs ok when the truck is cold but once it warms up to normal temp its acts up. It will not go above 2300 rpms. I used to be able to get on it if i wanted but it does not allow me to do that anymore. And when i push the pedal all the way to the floor it boggs and then it cuts out and then it sounds like its getting to much air. It sounds like i have no air filter on. I have replaced the fuel filter, and done a tune up. I hvae cleaned the throttle body and I have also checked alll vaccum lines and checked all sensors and made sure everything checked out. I have been pouring time and money into this to get it fixed. This is the best way to explian this on here without you here to see for yourself.

id check your TPS for dead spots (requires an analog DVOM). it also wouldnt hurt yo have a parts store test your ignition module.

There was a new tps just bought for it and put on. I was doing some research on this problem and there alot of forums are sayin that it could be a little chip in the computer that was a recall and it was 87 to 92. the ingition moudle was replaced about five months ago right i bought the truck

ive never heard of such a recall, but it might be worth looking into. maybe try a junkyard PCM.

Thats what i was going to do is just try one from a junk yard. where is the pcm located i know where the eec is located which is passenger side underneath kick panel

Oh alright thank you. Is there a way that the charcoal canister could be casing the truck to run the way it is running cause when i bought the truck i got another one of those cause the first one broke and ran great for bout four months.
