Don't know what to do with left over part in drum brake hardware kit

92' Ford Ranger XLT with 2.9 V6.

This is all part of my rear axle assembly replacement with backing plates. The axle assembly is completely installed.
But I have to redo the drum brakes. I have one part left over. What do I do with that black spring? (I just hung it there for display purposes.)

I notice my adjuster screw doesn't seem too tight and fell off a few times. Does that black spring have something to
do with holding down the adjuster screw and lever?

I also found a photo of a completed drum that uses the same drum hardware in my kit.

That spring goes behind the adjusting lever... one end rests on the shoe and the other end hooks over the lever to apply downward pressure. It is pictured in the completed backing plate.
 
Been there done that! That spring is a booger sometimes to get in correctly!
 
Gump is correct. Off comes the adjuster, spring on back together.
 
Ok. That is what I suspected. But the photo is kind of hazy in that area.

So does the end of the spring with the most pronounced curve, wrap around the BACK of the adjuster screw?

And the other end of the screw inserts into the hole in the brake shoe? It's kinda' hard to see in that part of the photo

(I have to walk to the auto parts store again. I'll be back)
 
No

Hook loops over lever... straight end lays on shoe.

The spring forces lever down.

Get that on there with the self adjuster cable unhooked. Once lever spring installed... take cable off guide and hook to lever... the lift lever and slip cable back on the guide. Easy....
