Hey guys, Im starting to swap a Mercedes OM617 into my 93 ranger. Im got just about everything figured out, however i have one issue... Im gonna be using the factory flywheel on the diesel, but im worried the starter either isnt gonna work or its gonna be really weak trying to turn over a 5 cylinder with almost double the compression.

My question is this.

Does anyone know if any other starters bolt up to the stock transmission, i may just have to go see the parts guys and see what all they have in stock.

Thanks in advance!

welcome! no idea but a diesel ranger would be cool

What transmission are you going to use? Will it even bolt up to that engine?

M5od-r1, it will with an adapter plate
Cool. I didn't think it would be very easy to use the M5OD-r1 since it had different bolt patterns for the various Ranger engines. M5OD-r2 , I believe has the standard small block Ford bolt pattern and may be easier to find an adaptor plate. But that's as far as my knowledge goes on that. I haven't actually shopped for adaptors.

I had a 1995 Mercedes 300sd, a few years ago and wished I could have kept it for such a project.

The 5 cyl om617 is going to be very tight, lucky for me ive got a buddy who owns a cnc company who is gonna be making the adaptor plate, then i just have to get a crank adapter made up for it

Ah. There’s the hidden ace up your sleeve.
