I just had a service done and they didn't mention this. I just happened to look under my 2011 ford ranger and was wondering if this looked normal. Mileage is approximately 100,000 km. And the truck is driving fine. Is there an easy way to upload an image?

I don't think you can upload files until you have been a member of the site longer, no don't know when that is or how that works.
I think you need to have 15 or 20 posts before you can upload

Most use a place like Photobucket to share images.
You can upload photo to a site like that and you will get a Link address to that 1 photo.
And you can post that Link here, that is allowed.

Reason for the delay on new members posting files is because of space it takes on the forums server and the possible content of the files.
While you are obviously a legit user and have a legit question.

There are others that are not so legit humans and even computers that troll websites looking for "holes" in security.
So they can upload files that could have virus or photos that may be advertising or porn advertising.

Differential Pinion Seal. (Yoke seal would also get the point across)

A little seepage isn't that big a deal. Just check the fluid on a timely basis. That's a bit on the heavier side however.

Tricky to replace. Pinion nut has to come off, yoke next....Then the seal. Had one done on my (former) company mini-van. Pepboys wound up causing $650 in damage to the rear end. Normally the seal replacement is simple, but setting the bearing preload, possible crush sleeve replacement...etc.. That's where the fun can begin.


I'll let others more knowledgeable then I am to respond. That's just my 2 cents.

yes, that worked

I would clean it off, degreaser and wire brush, check the level in differential as well.

Then drive it a while to see how much it is leaking
It is most likely a current leak but you never know

Keep an eye on the level, will probably need to take it in and have a pro fix it.

Those are easy to fix, use a chisel to mark a line across the bolt and nut (that way when you put the nut back on, you tighten it down so that the mark lines up and is torqued down pretty dang close to where it was before.) Zip the nut off, old seal out, new seal in, reassemble pinion flange. Done.

This is off topic but you have a banner that reads 'ASE Certified Tech' and you take it to a mechanic? Why not do it yourself since you are 'Certified'? Am I missing something?

Thanks for the response!! I thought it would be obvious that I wasn't a technician by the questions I am asking. I must have clicked something when signing up. Just looking for some friendly advice, which I had received up to this point. It's great that you took time out of your day to make this post thought!

It is common for the area to be wet after a seal replacement. Degrease and power wash it off and drive it a few days. If the wet comes back, take it back to be redone
