Does it matter what mass air flow sensor you use?

I picked up a cheap lil 4x4 Ranger. It had been in a small front end crash and the mass air flow sensor and air intake were damged. The guy I bought it from ( a car flipper) thought it had the 3.0 engine and grabbed a sensor from what he said was a Ford tempo. The #'s on the sensor seem to show up more as a 5.0 mustang sensor.F1ZF12B579-AA AFH55-03b

Im chasing codes and a rough idle and poor gas milage. But none of the codes are mass air flow related. I wanna grab a ranger/explorer one this weekend, but wanted to ask you guys, should I? Does anyone have a 94 4.0 they can reply with the code on there sensor so I can get the right one? Figured I look for a 93/94 ranger /explorer. Thanks!

I have a MAF from a 94 4.0 that I can get the part number off of once my wife gets home.

Yes, having the wrong sensor in there will do all sorts of weird things, but not necessarily set MAF codes.
