My family is trying to train our dog to get out of her kennel. Now during the day, from about 7am-5pm none of us are home, and we put our German Shorthair Female (3-4 years old, not sure because we adopted her) in a kennel.

We would like to train her to not be in the kennel, but as of now, we are positive she would tear things up. We want to keep her in our kitchen, which is PLENTY of space.. and has windows and also vents (for AC and heat). There is also a back door that she loves to lay in the sun in front of.

It is a very dog friendly environment, except she goes crazy when we leave.

I am looking for some websites to help with this.
She loves to get on the counters, and we are REALLY trying to break that.. but she is just such a hard learner, haha.

You may not like me for saying this but buy a shock collar...a nice one with the push button remote or one with the neck prongs that sense when the dog barks. My buddy used the remote collars and his black labs because they kept escaping from the yard. Now when he shows them the remote they listen. I used both on my dog to stop him from running down the hallway to the back bedrooms because we have cats and they like to hang out back there and he bothers them.

So like how would I do that (even though we probably won't do this)?

Right now we have a gate up while we are cleaning... trying to introduce her staying in there with us still here to make it comfortable. Going to give treats after a while to associate good feelings with staying in there without whining.

^thats f*cked

anyways, I found that food is a good way to teach is treats.

How's it F'ed up? It doesn't hurt him enough to where he has to be taken to the emergency vet. Go to pet smart and look at them. Ask for some advice. We used to have to put up gates across the hallway so he wouldn't go down there til we did this. It got really old having to jump over the gate just to get to the bathroom or get something from my room.

beatings. lots of beatings......... no we use the treat and praise method for good behavior and responce to a command and a sharp pop on the nose for bad behavior. seems to work really really well, but my puppy is more intelligent than the average mutt. FYI, he still shits in the house if i forget to take him out every 4 hours.

our dog is VERY intelligent as well.. i am pretty sure the humane society told us it is a very common trait for hunting dogs, but also exceedingly a trait in german shorthairs.

we have tried swats on the nose alot too, and she knows when she is in trouble as she always sits down and looks away from us.

we don't like scolding her, but we don't know how to handle it besides swatting or using the kennel for punishment.

she has been getting alot of exercise lately as she has now figured out she can run around the entire yard (around perimeter of house) without getting shocked (electric fence). we could leave her out there for hours, finally spring time here in nebraska.

she LOVES being outside, and we love that she loves it.

we just really want to have her to be able to stay in the kitchen instead of a kennel by the end of summer, hopefully at the latest. we would prefer instantly, but know that it will take weeks, if not months.

You NEED to scold em. Don't beat em to within an inch of their lives, but you have to punish them to show them that you are the alpha male and she is not. They will associate the bad behavior with pain. To teach my dog tricks I use treats. He associates paw and sit with treats so he listens...it's quite simple.:icon_thumby:

We can get her to sit, lay down (with a bit of work), she loves to shake, and can roll over if she is lying down as well.

We can also get her to stay pretty well, unless there is a big distraction like somebody walking on our porch, or if the door is open (as she LOVESSS to go outside).

This seems like a weird question in my mind, but do dogs sense gender? I am wondering this because I don't know if female dogs respond better to other females as they are the alpha female, or if they still respond just as well to alpha male figures as well.

We are going to start incorporating fencing her in the kitchen every night a bit I think.. hopefully it will start working out well.

I think they do. My dog is getting older and is starting to get a little more aggresive with male dogs/female dogs in his space. I know one thing for sure, he doesn't like some black people. Not trying to be racist but he really doesn't, he'll bark at them if he see's them walking down the street. :icon_rofl:

You could always try a clicker, teach her to do things, and if she does it, click it followed by a good girl and then a little treat. Seems to do the trick but u just have to remember to keep with it. As for the shock collar....yes it may not hurt them as much, but its very psychological on them because once you shock them for doing things, they are scared sh*tless to do anything, or even become afraid to go outside because they are scared of being shocked for doing something, not saying every dog does that but why dont u put the shock collar around your neck and press the button, if u dont like the feeling, you think the dog does?

when we first got our dog (year old black lab)we decided to leave him out one day to see how he did, when we got home we found a bunch of stuff chewed up so we started putting him in the cage while at work or if we went out then after close to a year of this we decided to leave him in the room for short periods of time and he did well so we left him for longer periods in the room and he did good it has now got to the point that we leave him in there all day while we are at work(about 9 hours) and he does fine.

also never hit your dog in the face when they are bad because everytime you go to pet the dog it makes them think you are going to hit him/her and they cower in fear always whack him/her on the ass.

This is one reason I don't have a dog. It takes a huge amount of dedication to train a dog.

First thing is, there needs to be ONE person in charge of it. That way the dog doesn't have too much to interpret while he is learning how to learn. Once he is trained in a few things, other people will be able to talk to him more easily.

I don't like whacking a dog. They are very social and definately want to please you if you treat them decently. When you get behind, they act up. Most people don't have the time to get a dog integrated into the family correctly and most dogs aren't well behaved. For me, it's all or nothing so I choose nothing until I have more time. I hate misbehaved dogs (or kids).

The shock thing can work but it's a crutch and your dog will become more jittery if you don't use it right. Your dog already doesn't respect you and now you are going to shock him to make him respect you. It will work. And there may be no other choice at his age.

Well I cant give personal experience since I dont have a dog and never trained one. However my roommate has a 4 yr old black lab that he has owned since he was a pup. He is one of the best trained dogs despite his energy. I asked my roommate what he did to train him and besides constant praise/scolding he did use a shock collar especially when they go out in the public and he is off leash. Also he used to run him twice a day. Once in the morning and again at night. This helped alot during the first year. BTW, the dog hasnt been fixed since he bred him because of his strong line. I think a shock collar is a good form of training. Also letting him spend as much time as possible where he will be alone. If possible, try to have someone stop by at lunch time to play with the dog. This is what my roommate did for the first few weeks so the dog wouldnt feel abandoned.

Will said it perfectly, dedication! Two years ago my wife bought me my first Min Pin male, and to this day we are still training him. Another good point was that it takes ONE person to take the lead in training, while the rest of the family follows just to reinforce the methods. Time outside just playing is a great way to relieve the stress of being couped up in house all day, too. Just don't ever stop short training sessions, praise the dog when it "gets" it. Dedication, patience, and love makes for a great dog. Sit Jo, sit, good dog!
