hey guys ive got a question 4 u all my biddy just picked up a late 70s dodge for scrap and it has 8 lug axles.

there is a "70" stamped into the front housing and enclosed knuckles and from what ive reasearched the 70s did have an enclosed knuckle so thats what i figure it is. my question is what u figure thatd be worth? from what i understand its fairly rare he has the rear end as well and the motor t case and trans as well

the more popular and valuable D70's are the disc brake models, open knuckle, and high pinion. Its still a D70 front but its not the "holy grail" by any means.

Unfortunately that axle is pretty much worthless for a wheeling rig.

why worthless? it still has to be stronger then a 1/2 ton axle

You never will find the holy grail, everybody hates whatever it is they don't have. Dana 44 guys think the 60 is too big and bulky, the Dana 60 guys think the 44 is to small and delicate... so on and so forth.

Here is some reading for ya if you haven't found it.

For the high price of FREE, I think it is a hard deal to pass up... but that is my unexpert opinion.

about the only thing its good for is something that needs a high carrying capacity. Its like 6,000lb if I remember right.

Hub lockouts and full time flanges: The old style closed knuckle 70's had lockouts and they used an external style hub. Warn makes 35 spline lockouts for the internal style hub...and the external style 35 spline lockout has long been discontinued.

5-88x u-joint is the same size as a 1480 series (5-332x), but uses external snap-rings for retention (like a driveshaft ujoint).

Basically dude, chances are 10 to 1 that it has Tracta joints, which aren't much, if any stronger than a D44 joint. It has weak axles in it. It can be converted to 35spline inner and outter D60 shafts, disc brake, but it is VERY costly. Not worth the effort.

It can be made up to par, but for all the time and money you would dump into it, you might as well of just bought a D60F to begin with... even if the D70 front was free.
