Do You Think I Can Tow It?

Well, I finally scratched an itch that I've had for a while.

I bought a Full Size Bronco with the 351 :headbang:

Problem is, I need to tow it home 'cause it's not insured and the valve covers leak to the point that I'm afraid it would start a fire.

My question is: Can my Ranger tow this on a 700# to #1000 trailer?

Oh, it's a 4.0 5 speed and I have the frame mounted hitch.

I'm positive I can tow it on a car dolly, which I will do if absolutely necessary.

What do you think?

Sure it can. Just don't use overdrive and give your self plenty of room between cars.

My dad use to own a 91 Ranger 4x4 5spd 2.9L. He would use it to tow his 19' bassboat around, which probably weighs around 3k ~ 4K lbs with trailer. It had just enough power to do the job. So a 4.0L should have plenty more power to handle the job better.

How Far?

the trailer has functioning brakes, right?

You have sufficient tie downs and know how to tie it down?

you shouldnt have a problem towing it. i used a 1500# flatbed car hauler behind my 02 ranger with the 4.0 in it last month with the box loaded and my other ranger on the trailer. i pulled it about 70 miles without any problems

my buddy has a 04 ranger fx4 4x4 4.0 automatic and he hauled 2 quads 2 dirtibkes all the gear on a 1,000 + lbs trailer loaded down with 3 fullsize guys and a girl up front it did just fine accually it did great i was very impressed

my b2 was towed home with my dads 4.2 auto on a big ass heavy duty trailer, and next thursday we will be towing home my 78 bronco with a 351M on it :D

my father in-law used to tow his big ass boat around i think it was like 1800 or mor ebig ass boat didnt have no problems! it is only a 4cyl 5speed plus lug around tree cores cause he ran a tree bussiness! im sure you wont have no problems! just belive it wll & you'll make it home for you to venture into getting your bronco running again with a new life * owner ;)

A FSB is probably about 4800lbs, add 1000 for the trailer, and you're right at (if not a tad over) the limit for the maximum trailer weight Ford ever recommended for any Ranger 4x4 (which will outweigh your truck by a good 1000lbs).

If you plan on towing it any distance any faster than 50 MPH, I'd suggest getting a weight-distributing hitch for the trailer. Without this (and possibly a sway control bar as well), there's some chance that thing could whip your truck into the ditch at speed. Trailer brakes are NOT optional.

Having all that, I'd say you should be fine if you're careful. Give yourself some time to get up to speed however, it WILL make your 4.0L feel like a 4-cyl running on 3 (and of course the same for stopping too). Stay out of OD (5th gear).

Good luck :icon_thumby:

I towed my Camaro on a 16ft flat.bed with my 97 2.3..... did great. just very slow take off and shut down. I wouldn't be scared to tow it.
RangerSVT pulled a bronco from new york to TN with his turbo lowrider ranger.

If your only worried about the valve covers..... I'd degrease it, scrape it, and put in a new gasket 14 bucks at advance.
then call your insuerance company and either put it on a temporary plan (i do this all the time) or if your like my ins company, anytime you buy a new vehicle they cover it with an existing policy for 14 days.

Just because it can pull it isn't the main factor. Stopping is more important, and even more so in a panic situation. Find a friend with a equal or larger truck.

This is a bad idea.

There is no 700-1,000# trailer a full-size Bronco can fit on.

Bad idea.

yeah, gotta agree with Adrienspeeder and Will. pulling it is not the issue, stopping it will be. especially if some soccer mom in her minivan slams on the brakes right in front of you after she passes you and pulls in.... (had that happen to me tonight, and I was not hauling anything and it was all I could do to keep from smacking in to her)

I pulled my donor ranger with My ranger, about 50 kilometers It was a interesting experience. I would do it again but anything larger I would be extremely careful.

Braking and corners were my problem. even bumps were felt as the other rangers weight was trying to pull the rear of my ranger in another direction.

I personally would not pull a full sized bronco with a ranger. I think the weight differences between the two vehicles is too much.

Don't take it on a highway. take it slow really slow as in back up traffic slow => nothing to do with not being able to get it going its all about getting it to stop.

Well, I got it home. :headbang:

Borrowed a wide Tow dolly (couldn't get the trailer) and an F150.

No problems.

In the driveway now. Pics soon to come. :D

I've pulled my dad's 23ft pontoon with my 4x4 4.0 a few times. It's about 17 miles to the closest lake. It's a harrowing experience to say the least. After the third or fourth time (and tank of gas haha) I decided it was too much for the underpowered 4.0. Then I just started borrowing his F-350 with the 6.0. It made short work of that pontoon.
