Is it recommended at all to run a 7.5 with a 4.0L OHV? My friend will sell me an 8.8 from a '90s pickup, but I don't want to buy and install it if I don't have to.

IMO; if driving like a regular daily driver the 7.5 will be fine.

As with anything, it will eventually break. It's a matter of when and why. There is no set magic spot where "at this point right here, kablamo". The higher the power, the more foolish driving, the more mechanically stressful maneuvers, etc, the shorter it's life will be.

Don't drive like an idiot, and it should have a fairly satisfactory service life. If you like putting the power down, it won't last as long.

I agree. In regular driving it should be fine.

If you plan to tow though (or you have bigger than stock tires on it), then get the 8.8".

The truck is currently my dd until I get something more fuel efficient. Tires are larger than stock, but not by much. I do wheel it whenever I get the chance, and I will need to tow in the future. Soooo, I guess buy and install...
