This has been getting worse. At first I thought it was the cold doing it, but I think its getting worse.

I'll turn the ignition switch to start, and the engine crancks a couple revolutions, and then stops, but the starter continues to wiiiiirrrrrrr.

These have the starter solenoid separate, located on the fender well, or someplace right, so if the starter is getting power, then its the pinion gear in the starter not working right, and need to replace the starter?!?

Whats the procedure for replacing the starter on an '89 Ranger with the 2.3L, and A4LD tranny?

the starter is held onto the transmission with 3 bolts and one wire connection, the bolts have 13mm heads and the wire has a 3/8" head

sounds like either the starter or the ring gear on the flex plate.

My Ranger had the same problem last Sept. If it seems like the battery is dead (it just makes a grinding noise or clicks or something), and the lights dim when you try to start it, it could need a starter. If it does fail to start like that, tap the starter with a hammer. If she fires up, it most likely needs a starter. If she doesn't fire up, you might have a different problem, or your starter may be absolutley trashed. My 94 4.0L starter was $119 at AutoZone. Hope this helps!
