Do I need a new crank case (96 ext. cab 4.0 4x4)?

Hey everybody,

So here's what's happened: on Saturday my daughter played around in my Ranger. When I left with the truck later on, I was on the phone and didn't pay too much attention but apparently my daughter had managed to turn the knob from "2 high" to "4 low" without my noticing so I drove normal speed with the 4 low engaged, idiot that I am.

After a minute or so something definitely broke under the car (there was grinding noice for a couple of seconds and then something snapped) and both the 4wd indicator lamps (hi & low) on the dash lit up (and stay lit).

The truck still works and shifts as usual although it's stuck in 4 low mode and when I turn the knob to switch it to high gear, nothing happens.

Do you guys think it was the trans case that broke or could it be something something else based on the description above? If it was the trans case, is the part I should be looking for a "borg warner 1354 electrical" trans case (I have a 1996 xlt ext. cab 4.0)?

Thanks a bunch,

Henrik from Sweden

I certainly sounds like you popped the transfer case. The part you are replacing is the Borg Warner 1354 Electric. The part you actually WANT is the Borg Warner 1354 MANUAL and associated shifters/boots.

Yeah, good luck finding that in Sweden...

They are hard enough to come by here.

Hey guys and thank you very much for your reply, now I know what I need to find. I'm gonna go with the 1354 electric as I don't really use the truck for any hard core 4x4 action (I never even tried the 4x4 before this happened). Do you know if the 1354 electric comes in different versions or if they're all the same?

Also, is the job of replacing it a big one or fairly simple for someone who's not completely useless with tools (I've rebuilt a couple of bikes and boats) but has very limited experience with cars?

Again - thanks so much for replying!

Henrik
