So I ripped out headliner board. I'm skeptical on junkyards and new ones are ridiculous. Looking for alternatives, maybe discontinue board completely. Some insulation I can adhere to bare roofline and smooth edges as well as give a coat of paint would be awesome.

Off the top of my head I'm thinking cardboard that you wet down lightly and form gently to the curvature of your roof and punch holes for the tabs so it's removable. After that I'd leave it dry and then reinforce it with a coating of some sort, plasti dip maybe? Something strong would be in order to allow it to flex but not give completely. Then I would get some heat resistant adhesive and do what you would to recover the headliner as described here

Nice, trying to find a plasti or mastic ATM. Any suggestions there?
