Do all 2.9's have the same distributor?

My 89 v6 distributor gets too hot to touch and I believe it is causing my engine miss and knock when it gets up to operating temperature. When the engine is cold it runs perfectly.

Your entire engine should be about 200*.. All of it should be too hot to touch. Your description is of a lean fuel condition...not a distributor problem.

I dont think it is a lean condition, it may be but i dunno. The plugs look fine. Teh fuel pressure is fine and the sensors are either new or tested.

The intake manifold is not even half the temperature of the distributor. The coolant hoses are cooler than that distributor. Everything is fine until the engine reaches operating temperature then it slowly gets worse. It throws no codes, I am out of things to check. I have never had a distributor get that hot before.

The only things that have not been tested or checked are the injectors, distributor, ecu.

TFI,map, ect, act, coil, cap, rotor, wires, plugs, fuel pressure, tps, oxygen sensor, cats, are all new or tested when the truck starts acting up. It runs 110% when it is cold.

I checked the timing, it was at 14, I planned on putting it back to 12 today. I rechecked it this morning and it wasn't at 14 or anywhere close to it. I double checked that I had the spout connector out and that my mark at 12 was still there. I assume the gear is worn on the shaft. I couldn't pull it to check because it was too hot.

Kerk You seem intent on messing up your distributor. After you get it all mucked up and have a new one installed look at the fuel for your problem. When you checked the timing this morning how many rpm was the engine turning?

I have fuel pressure while it runs good and bad. There isnt any fuel coming out of the vacuum line on the back of the pressure regulator. The fuel filter is new.

I checked the timing at idle. Then i tried to give it some rpms to see if it made any difference.

How can you mess up a distributor? You assume that I have zero mechanical ability and are certain that I will "muck" it up.

Unless you have anything constructive to add then id rather you stay out of the thread. Go ride your high horse back into the pasture.

just take the cap off and wiggle/twist the dist. shaft to make sure it turns freely, it should not wiggle side to side.

if the shaft wiggles back and forth it can contact the pickup coil inside and cause the problem you are experiencing.

set that timing back at the correct spec. too

obviously if the timing jumps around while you watch it with the SPOUT unplugged is the distributor shaft

Dang Dude - he's just trying to help. Chill already.

The gear/shaft had a bit of play in it. I replaced it and set the timing to 12. So far it has less power but I also took timing out of it. It didnt give me any knock or miss at operating temp. I need to run it farther than I did but it seems fixed.

Does the sticker under the hood say 10 or 12 DBTDC and you can always remote mount the TFI with a good heat sinc the reason the dizzy gets hot is the TFI produces alot of heat period. You can also pull the dizzy when it is cold but I also think your spinning your wheels if it turns easy by hand and dont wiggle side to side and it runs good cold it sounds to me like the TFI did you put the heat sinc grease on it when you replaced it.

The old tfi had no grease on it. When i replaced it with grease it made a big difference in overall performance. I have no sticker under the hood, and it runs much better at 12.

set at 10 those two degrees can make all the difference especially in the upper end of the power band your too far advanced.

Then run some seafoam to clean the cylinders and valves. pour a little at a time down the throttle body at about 1500 rpm slowly about 1/4 to half a can then turn the engine off for 10 minutes then take it for a drive at higher rpms to blow the carbon out of it and see if that works. pour the remainder in the gas tank will help clean the fuel system and injectors fill the tank up first.

I will try 10 tonight,it runs great but doesn't have much top end. It still has a slight miss but it is barely noticeable. I already have the seafoam, just haven't had the time to use it.

Thanks for the help, I was running out of things to check.

Yea pour the seafoam in and immediately turn it off after 10 mins or so start it up and either drive it at high rps or just rev it up the more smoke the more carbon being burnt but get it good and hot it may look like a steam engine going down the road or fog up the neighbors depending on how bad the cylinders and exhaust are.
