All four. You need to be able to steer too. If you have a pair of tires with a lot more traction than the other pair you can run into a situation where the vehicle will swap ends very easily or it won't turn and you hit the ditch [or that idiot in front of you].

If you can't afford to get tires then at least get chains.

Don't buy used stud-able tires thinking you can get them studded, you can't. The holes fill up with sand and gravel.

I've heard that too. Some provinces say you can't use them in the summer, and have definite dates when they are allowed and not.

I read an article a long time ago that said there was no observable degradation of the road surface when using studded tires year round. I wish I could find it and send it to some of the bonehead lawmakers.

in Michigan they are not legal because none of the tire manufacturers have provided the state info about road surface wear relating to state law.

I prefer chains over studs. Chains are easier to take off and on then changing all 4 tires. Regular unstudded winter tires from November-march and throw chains on when SHTF.

Buy some snow chains for the bad weather and a pair of jack stands for the tire rotation.

I have a full set of winter tires on rims and they are great, I usually have a fiberglass cap on in the winter and that’s been about enough weight for me.

Snow on side streets here in Alberta, starts coming down in Nov. And cul-de-sac I live in and side street I work off have been plowed once in 21 years I have been here. So, that snow gets packed into a layer of ice and doesn't melt until sometime in March. I'd have to install and remove snow chains at least 3 times daily, no thanks.

p.s. I've upgraded the garage with lift & impact. Course, now I rotate tire for 1/2 the neighbors in cul-de-sac. On other hand, they don't complain about occasional derelict RBV undergoing renewal as a result.
