Was wondering if there would be much of a difference in gear sets from different manufacturers front and back. I got a set of Motive Gears in the back and I can get my hands on a set of Genuine Gears for almost nothing new. The gear ratios are 4.56.

Anyone think that there might be a difference in ratios between manufacture?
Was told by a mechanic that you should match the sets.

Thanks,

Numbers matching is numbers matching. It doesn't make a bit of difference who you buy them from if the ratio works out the same.

Wouldn't they have different tolerances?

A friend of mine had problems with his ford bronco2 did R&P change with two different manufactures and had problems with his front diff when in 4wd. His would bind up and not dissengage the transfer case unless he came to almost a complete stop. His mechanic dad said the ratios were off just enough to make it bind. Thats why I am asking these questions cause I don't want to have problems after the gear change. It's too much of a pain to change them just once.

The only way that could happen is if one of them was actually the wrong ratio. Mixing 4.09/4.10/4.11 gearing and other gearsets that are within the same .01 range is perfectly normal and won't cause any problems. If your friend ran into binding, one of the gearsets was simply the wrong ratio entirely, like 4.56 vs 4.10.

Something also to be said about gearsets...dont' go cheap chinese junk gears like from 4wheelparts. almost everyone I've talked to in the offroad world live by Yukons...thats also the case with my 3 buddys who own off road shops in my area. I've got 'em now too.
