differences between 4cyl m5od and 4L m5od

The internals are more or less the same. The gear ratios are a bit different and the cases are different, notably in the bell housing. The real major difference is that the bell pattern is different. A 4-banger trans won't bolt to a 4.0 because the bolt holes won't line up.

well i dont have a 4L to check. how else can i identify the 4L m5od? wats the pattern on the bellhouseing? anyone got any pics of the bell?:icon_confused:

I can try to get one in the next day or two.

i tired looking on google to no avail :annoyed:

anyone else? or even the bolt pattern of a a4ld or the like!

the bellhousing pictured could be EITHER a 4.0 or a 2.9

And infact that trans is a 2.9 transmission

How can I tell you ask?

Look at the outside edge of the bellhousing (like the edge of a coin)
See how the pictured bellhousing is smooth?

a 4.0 transmission case is "skeletonized" there are little depressions cast in
on the outside edge.

this was done as a visual identifier in the factory when both
2.9 and 4.0 transmisisons on the factory floor at the same
time in 1991 & 1992.

M5OD can be found in a junkyard,

To get an M4OD you gotta tear into an M5 and pull the OD gears out.:icon_thumby::icon_welder:
