Why does K&N carry different part numbers for these two cold air intakes? Are there different vacuum ports or something? I can't imagine them not being interchangeable?

Completely different engines. The 00' is the old Lima 2.5L. While the 02' is the newer Duratech 23. Thou the early 02's were the 2.5L. Maybe K&N is thinking the Duratech 23 for the whole 02' year.

Sorry, this is for the 4.0.

Oh. Then maybe it was for the change over from OHV to OHC. Gotta check on that one to be sure.

Edit: The reason was for the difference between the OHV 4.0L and SOHC 4.0L.

yeah. Explorer got the SOHC in 99, Ranger in late 01/02 MY.

Yeah, I learned that the fun way. Ford's oil filter app chart for the lube rack doesn't differentiate between ranger and explorer. Got and 00 ranger in one day for oil change, looked it up (because I knew it was right around the switching point). Chart said 99+ takes and 820 filter, grabbed one, put it on, let go, and it came back and hit me on the head.
