Diff grinding on turns

i noticed that my rear diff(lsd) started making grinding noises when turning. And it's quite loud...
I have changed fluid in hope that it would fix my problem, it didn't...

It's making noise only when turning.
What could it be?? Bearings??
I want to have an idea what to look for before i crack the whole thing open.

What are you using for diff lube? It should specifically state that it is good for LSD fills, not just top off. Or you can add friction modifier, IIRC, it is GM rated. I just use Mobil 1 75 W 90 synth . I drained and filled the diff at 250 k miles and revived the clutches so they stopped chattering around corners. This wasnt in a Ford , but diffs is diffs

I like having fun with my car but i'm also trying to take good care of it too My hobby is to break it and then fix it lol

The fluid didn't look like oil anymore

As for my diff lube i'm using castrol 80w90 limited slip

i put it in fresh yestarday

If it grinds during turns and is OK going straight you blew up at least one spider gear. No questions asked.

When i changed the oil i didn't spot any damage but ill look closely this time

I never worked on a diff before, I wouldn't imagine it will be hard to change spider gears??

When you submerge your axles (or trans/transfer case) you should most definatly replace the oil right away. Even a sealed rear end can draw in water when the fluid and air inside is hot, then contracts when cooled suddenly causing a slight vacuum. This is why your gear oil looks milky. Its water from offroading. How long has it been in there? Chances are everything in your rear end that requires gear lube has been worn and stressed. And I second a spider gear in the carrier being ****ed up. When you changed the fluid didn't you look in there to see if anything was "odd"?

I looked into the diff for a while, everything seemed healthy and in place. i didn't find any metal particles in the fluid eighter..

The water was in there for at least 10 days. I'm not sure what previos owner did with it...

I didn't change tranny or transfer case fluid since i went in the water...

Yea man when ever you venture into water or mud its a good idea to...

1. Clean your truck off. Some kids think its REALLY cool to drive around with a mud-caked truck but I laugh because its destroying their frame and body. It gets into moving parts in the suspension and driveline and chews them up. Once clean, it gives you a great opportunity to look for damaged parts (specifically brake system components).

2. At least check your fluids. If you notice ANY sign of milky color or bubbles/air then you might have water mixed in.

3. Hit all of your chassis grease points. And make sure to use a good quality grease.

Have a buddy on hand? You can throw a jack stand under one of the tires to lift it off of the ground. Block the other tire real good so it can't spin (especially if its a limited slip) Have your buddy spin the tire (use a breaker bar if need be) and take close note at what's REALLY making the noise.
