Hey guys, im changing my rear gears out in my 97 2wd ranger, from 373 to 410 and need a question answered. When you put the diff cover back onto the axle with a new gasket where do you put the rtv silicone. On the diff cover? On the axle? Or both? I looked in the tech library but it didnt say.

Thanks.

Dont even need a gasket, put the RTV on either surface you choose, I put it on the axle personally.

I looked at the old gasket I had on there and its pretty bad shape. I always thought you had to replace the gasket. (like an engine gasket) I guess not. I bought a new one to replace it but, didnt know which side to put the rtv on.

Most don't even use a gasket at all. Just a bead of RTV.

If you use a gasket, just add a thin coat on both sides of the gasket.

Gearboxes are much friendlier places than crankcases. They see far less heat, and no combustion products. A THIN bead of ultra black RTV will do it. Not too much or you'll never get the dang thing off again (and the plastic ones tend to break when you try -- BTDT).

Why would you rtv a gasket? What's the point of having a gasket then? Always silicone the surface with the threaded holes if possible. This will ensure you actually seal where you need to, opposed to sealing the cover and sticking it on where you run a chance of your bead missing the surface. Not a bad idea to go around the bolt holes either.

Matt

I used a gasket on the rear because...well, I really don't know why. I rtv'd it too. Just extra mental insurance I guess. I'm never in the water or anything so I go years without fluid changes.
