Diesel Ranger

my parents excursion tips the scale at over 8200 empty. 7.3 diesel loaded 4x4.
bu there are clean diesels in the us. VW has them and the only time they put visible smoke out the pipe is when they first start and when you floor it fomr a complete stop. my wifes vw is a clean running little car and thats a 03. the newer tdi engines they have out now in the us are suppost to be even cleaner!

im doing a very similar project, just half ton running gear...
my 4bt has 120hp. the perkins guy has to be more spicific of the engine model, they made lots.

more power to you dude! get that thing together!

It's sick to see more people doing this to rbvs.... I'm shopping for my 4bt now and just tryin to figure out what to put in for axles and tranny. I bought a dana 44 hp was gonna chop the right side down to fight early model shaft on pass side but now it's not even gonna get used QQ. so ya 1500 for a 4bt in my area just needs turbo redone and bamm i'm game. what transmission are you gonna use?

Out of curiousity, what do you guys plan to spend on a 4Bt swap? I did a swap using an OEM 1985 2.3 TD once and am happy with the results.

I'm in the middle of a 4BT swap right now. I've got $1600 in the motor, $100 for a M5R2 trans with transfer case, about $300 in clutch related parts, another $1000 for adapter plate, flywheel, starter, I figure about another $500 or so in the misc little stuff.........it's not a cheap swap by any means.

Befor you jump into the cummins you should do some research on the perkins , they weight about a 1/3 less and are just as good if not a better engine than cummins

What Perkins exactly are you talking about? I'm intrigued...

Wow, even with a rebuild, I was under $2500 CAD when I was done. Nice thing about the 2.3 is that its really light and that makes up for some of the lower Hp (I suspect 86 Hp is a conservative estimate). The suspension of the truck didn't even have to be modified after the diesel was dropped in. From what I am learning, the 4D55 is actually under rated if you get the later version roller cam head on it and torque the head bolts properly.

I disconnected the wastegate once and turned up the fuel screw just for the hell of it and that thing would MOVE! No smoke either. But it has a blow off valve that kept popping so after we drove around laughing hysterically I put the settings back to where they were,:icon_rofl: Still moves well enough.

Good luck with your project.:icon_thumby:

it depends on the trim and optional equipment. an '02 4x4 super duty can weigh anything from 5800 to over 7400. my point was, his ranger is not going to weigh more than a 1-ton :icon_cheers:

his ranger maybe not

my ranger weighs 5850 with me in it and a 1/2 tank of fuel on 305 tires.

with the planed flatbed build, cage work, bumpers ect with the big tires and big spare i am looking at 7000 pounds with trail gear.

5850 is light and current weight.

my truck when it was ultralight and at drag strip fighting wt was 4200 pounds with d35/8.8, lift and traction bars, 30 in track tires and gt40 efi engine, aod trans/2o8 jeep t case and light drive shafts. minimal bumpers and no winch....one battery ect ect.

hence the 5.slow sig i run for years. sure it blew most stock trucks away, 15's are still slower then smoke off shit though:icon_rofl:

i like the 6.5 diesel. very cheap to swap. no regrets.

a 4bt cummins would be a expensive rattling disaster for me.

the 3.3 industrial cummins in a low weight reg cab or b2 would be awesome though.

Even the Cummins engineers don't like that 3.9. It's for bread trucks and their $3.35/hr drivers.

does anyone happen to know of a website that list diesels engins that might be good canadates for swapping into a ranger? I've been thinking of this swap using a cummins 4bt as well but i've also heard of other diesels being used but i don't know any specs on on them.

Reliably the 4bt can only be turned up to about 160hp
without having the capabilities of a MAJOR aftermarket tuner.

400hp is kinda high end four valve 6cylinder.

On a 4cyl? Not a chance.

700lb is considerably heavier than a 351W
and on par with a 460 with an alloy intake manifold

29mpg AND 405hp? in what alternate universe?

a 4bt would be tolerable at 150hp in something like a full size bronco
(in place of a 4.9 L6)

A friend wanted to put one into an F150 then he found a wrecked Dodge
with a six cyl and he put the engine in an early F-250 instead

Nice truck..

THE biggest problem with the Cummins engine is the Dodge truck that's
usually wrapped around it.

rusty is 100% correct on the california laws.the motor needs to be your year model or newer with ALL applicable emissions to be legal no matter if it runs on deisel or flux capacitor and mr. fusion.

the O.P. shouldn't do it if he lives in an area where you smog every two years unless he wants to put on a greensticker and trailer it.
