just wanted to say hello!
been browsing over this site recently, getting info on bronco 2 ttb axel's....thought id register.
im in south east louisiana,i own a 86-87 factory ranger diesel (mitsubishi 4d55 turbo) 5 speed.runs great, but the chassis is toast, along with the clutch and brakes.im now looking at buying a decent bronco 2 4x4 with v6 auto, swapping in the diesel.
from what info ive gained over the web,the 4d55 will direct bolt to the v6 tranny.this may be a slow project, cash is limited.....so is time.

if all else fails, ill throw the engine in my 94 mitsubishi mighty max....its a direct fit.
or ill look for another donor 4 cyl ranger/bronco 2.

thank you all for this forum, and all the info posted here!:icon_cheers:

Welcome to the forums.

I don't think Ford ever put an auto behind the 2.3 TD
A4ld off a 2.8/2.9/4.0 is not going to bolt up

im a member of another ford forum,a member there states that the 4 cyl gas burner and v6 ranger trannies have the same bolt patterns.
he picked up a used v6 tranny, installed it in his 4 banger ranger.....drop in fit!

im just not certin that the 4d55 has the same bolt pattern as the 4 cyl gas engine.

i do know that my ranger has a mitsubishi 4 speed manual with over drive.
bolted up to the 4d55 turbo 86hp.
a quick look at wikipedia (search bronco 2)shows that the 4d55 was available in auto and manual in the late 80's bronco 2 4x4's.
but wasnt a popular choice, consumers felt it lacked power.
so ill have to do a little research to see what tranny will be a direct bolt up.
id like to go 4x4 with this diesel.

transmission info is a little thin on the diesels...be sure and let is know what you find.
I know Mitsubishi used an auto sometimes
the d-50 is just one re-badged

ill keep you guys posted once i start tearing into my ranger/mitsubishi build.
i have 2 daily driver mighty max's 1 parts d-50 and the ranger....all 2wd.
be real nice to have the ranger or bronco 4x4 diesel.
ill do some research on the compatibilty in a few days.

Welcome! Show us pics of your turbodiesel! We love those...

Pete

this is all i have onhand,a old vid from last year.
im 500 miles away from it!

ill go post a proper thread in the 4 banger section.....thanx for the welcome!

The first thing you need to find out is what tranny do you have. The easiest way to tell is to count the bolts on the bottom pan of the tranny.

12 bolts = Mitsubishi FM145
14 bolts = Toyo Kogyo TK5

After you identify what tranny you have then it is easier to assist you with some of your questions. It is also important to Know if you have a 2wd or a 4wd vehicle.

The input/throwout bearing is a very common failure on the FM145/TK5 because it is flimsy and cheap. I usually throw away the input bearing that comes on a new slave cylinder and I install a heavy duty CenterForce throwout bearing. When you compare the CenterForce Bearing to the other aftermarket bearings there is no comparison. Since it takes 4-5 hours to replace a throwout bearing, I think it more than worth the extra $100 for the Centerforce bearing.

There are several differences and similarities with gas and diesel drivetrains. The 2.3 mitsubishi turbo diesel used a diesel specific starter, flywheel, and bellhousing. The parts that are compatible with the 2.8, 2.9 gas rangers are the Clutch, pressure plate, pilot bearing, throwout bearing, slave cylinder, hydraulic clutch hose, transmission, Tcase, driveshafts etc.

So as long as you have your diesel specific starter, flywheel, and bellhousing you are good to go because all the other parts interchange with the other rangers.

The FM145 and TK5 are interchangeable, but they do not share any internal parts. I am partial to the FM145 but that's just me. I have had good luck with the FM145.

No special modifications are neededto swap a 2.8 or 2.9 gas tranny into your 2.3 diesel as long as it is the same transmission, same drive(2wd or 4wd) and same manufacturer. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Congrats, glad you found your answer here before. Very informative for the next person to come across your thread now, as well.
