My uncle has a jeep liberty diesel. He says it will only go 40-45mph and it smokes black. And he can here a hissing sound. I haven't looked at it so to me the obvious would be that its running rich and might have a vac. leak. But does anyone know of another one that had this problem? or know what we should check? and as usual thanks for any help

good luck finding a vacuum leak on a diesel......... thats like looking for the radiator on a VW bug.

more likely a clamp on the turbo somewhere came loose or there is a hole in the intaake plumbing.....

My other uncle just test drove it and said it starts hard, and when you're driving it and hold the pedal steady it smokes black and surges. But if you "hammer" it it acts normal.

well there is a whole list of stuff to go through.

but it sounds like a turbo issue ......

the black smoke is because it is running rich...... it is not getting enough air for the amount of fuel it has.

the hard start points to an injector issue ......

but it could be something as simple as bad grounds.

could also be an EGR issue.........

is there a check engine light? first order of business is to get the codes.

They said it does have an engine light and it is on. I'm pretty sure their plan now is to take it to an autozone to search for codes. and i was told that the hissing sound ended up to be the fan, which makes no sense to me, that's just what they told me. I probably should be around the jeep so i know what's going on for sure.

Almost surely a turbo issue.

yeah, could also be EGR, but most likely its turbo

Yea my buddy blew his turbo and it smoked black and the driving issues sounds turbo........good luck with that

I haven't heard anything till today. They found a hole in the pipe after the turbo and ordered a new pipe today and it should be in tomorrow. Thanks for the help and i'll let everyone know how it acts after they get the new pipe on. So basically it was a turbo issue.

while you are in there, clean the EGR system with some brake clean or starting fluid.
