Die when put in second or first.

I have a 1997 4x4 ranger with 3.0 with an automatic trans. It runs great and shifts fine, but it I move the gear selector to second or first the truck dies. I can shift back to park are neutral and it will start up and run just fine. Any thoughts?

Does it do the same when put into any moving gear or just 1 or 2?
