I've been fighting an issue with the '93 4.0....Running down the highway motor lost all power. Started it and would barly stay running. Finally did and started to limp home, did it again. Went under the hood and unplugged the MAF and took off home at full speed and power.

I've had this issue for a while now, put two MAF's on, coil pack, O2's, plugs, wires. Checked IAC and TPS (both were in specks) Thrown the codes 177, 153. Introduced SeaFoam through the brake booster (slowly) This has fixed the problem for 2 weeks.....

This damn thing is driving me nuts!

ideas?

It is the second remanufactured one in it...I'm not saying that they arn't bad from the factory, they should be good. I also thinking a bad computer? How can they be checked. The problem comes and goes, so that has me thinking electrical.

What about the IAC? how does it fit into this mess?

I dont know where to check what the codes mean...but when my ex's pontiac's head gasket blew it threw a 02sensor code...and when i blew a headgasket in my maxima it didnt throw any codes...but it ran like you said yours is....Has your fuel mileage dramatically decreased? Does it get hot? Does yout cat converter get too hot? Maybe if it is too clogged to even let air out it would cause the engine tosputter and die...definately cause it to lose power.

Long shot but look at the air tube after the maf before the throttle body. look for any holes or cracks. If it's getting too much air it could confuse the puter.

Just a thought.

Got tired of it and took it to a "real" mechanic....He's got the $5000 computer to check it out....so far it was confusing him also! I'll make sure to post the solution

dont count out faulty wiring inside the harness. i dropped $2000 with a shop that had all the fancy computers, tools, and mechanics 'working for years on cars' and the dumb shits misdiagnosed a bad PCM, bad engine temp, and bad idle. the truck saw a shop because i was living in an apartment with my tools and a garage 2 hours away...

bad idle was a broken wire on the IAC controller- in the harness. the white with a blue tracer.

bad PCM and IAC was a bad engine wiring harness- as indicated by the bad wire on the IAC section. when pulling the engine for later unrelated issues i pulled the tape and tubbing off the wires and found 80-90% of the wires were correded so bad the insulation was crumbling.

ohm meter and some wiggle testing would had uncovered this with about as much work as it takes to swap parts and pull codes.

i had a similar problem with mine, but mine was right at the start. it would run, rev high, then die. i replaced MAF sensor and plugs. kept doing it so took it to the dealership, the guy put it on the computer and pulled a crank code. it turned out to be the two wires for the crank positioning sensor were rubbed through. just a thought.

Took Terry the Mechanic 4 days to get to the truck...at first he was thinking fuel injectors or injector relay....yesterday afternoon he called me and had me pick up a MAF(thats #4)....luckily I was in Dallas working, I've used all the ones up north.....Stay tuned.....

The MAF was bad....also three of the six injectors were bad or weak....$400 worth of injectors and it runs like a champ....Hope my problems help someone else!
