Yesterday I was playing offroad with my 4.0 BII.

I was testing my "new" winch up a slight incline. The current draw bogged the motor down until it died, and I couldn't get it to restart. It would turn over normally, but wouldn't fire. The coolant overflow tank was living up to its name and overflowing; first time seeing that. The temp gauge wasn't any higher than normal. After waiting about 20 minutes and pouring some cold liquid over the engine, it started and didn't give me any further troubles.

Any guesses why it failed to start after it died? Was it heat-related?

I don't know if the old 4.0's had a TFI module but they were known to randomly stop working when they got hot.

Also, never pour cold water on a hot engine, you're lucky nothing cracked.
 
possible cause could be a drained out alternator not giving enough current for the winch draw? and this related to the "dead" battery feeling? not starting and heat? this could be but i doubt it.

It has a DIS module, but I don't recall running into a TFI module when I did the swap. Are TFI and DIS mutually exclusive? Are they different titles for the same component?
I know it could have damaged something. I tried to avoid the block/heads and aimed towards radiator hoses and valve covers. My first choice was to crank the heat, but I didn't want to risk draining the battery.

Overdrawing the alternator is what made it stall, but I don't know why it wouldn't restart. It didn't feel like a dead battery. Engine cranked; it just wouldn't pop.

DIS stands for "distributor-less ignition system" and the TFI module was only on engines with a distributor so nope totally different things lol. It was just a guess, I'm not super familiar with the older 4.0 OHV motors so didn't know if they still used the 2.9 ignition system or not.

The 4.0l never had a distributor.

Is a DIS module the same as an ICM? Why can't Ford just stick to a single name!
