Where do I get one? Local Parts place wanted $70 for one, good price or look online?

www.harborfreight.com

One at this place for $15 (plus you'll need the magnetic base for another $13). It's china-made junk, but seems to be accurate enough for most axle work.

If the one you found is actually made in America (USA or Can) and includes the base, for $70 I'd be tempted to buy it.

I just bought on for $23 today with a magnetic base at my local auto parts store!

I bought mine from summit for like $25-30 it includes the base and a case. Very good quality!

Summit seems good, what range should it be for gear work?
One is 0-.250 in. other is 0-1.000 in.

The .250" one would work fine for axle work (you're only using it to check the backlash which would range about .02" tops on any axle I know of).

The 1.0" one might prove a bit more versatile if you find you need it for something else however.
