So what are the easiest axels to look for in the junk yard to move up to 8.8?
Need bolt up for imeadiate repair as I am going for back surgery in a couple weeks and gotta get her running by then 6 front lift 4 rear 4:56.

Running 33's for now. will replace gears when swap.
Thanks all.

Rangers with the 4.0 have the 8.8 rear. If you've destroyed 3 sets of gears already though, you may benefit from the 31 spline Explorer 8.8. Look for.... 91-01 (I think) Explorers.. Somewhere along the line they switched to IRS.

if the R&P is what failed (and it probably is, that 4.56 pinion in the 7.5 is TINY)...a 28 spline 8.8 would probably cure the problem (the 28 and 31 spline axles use the same gear sets)...and the 28 spline is bolt in.

if your really lucky...a few FX4 rangers came with a 31 spline 8.8 WITH 4.56's right from the factory that will bolt in...but good luck finding that combo in the junkyard.

I think that you would have a better chance of finding a unicorn...;)

If your are going to bother to swap, might as well get an 8.8 that is 31 spline.

hick

If you lack access to a welder, then just go 28 spline 8.8. Like Wicked said, it would be a direct bolt in, and it would provide you the stronger axle.

If you can easily flip the perches and weld them back on, I would just snag a 31 spline 8.8 from an explorer.

If you are using this for off-road, then I would recomend using a full replacement carrier locker, such as a Detroit, TrueTrac, OX, or ARB. The stock open carriers tend to be weak.

I didn't think about the R&P being the same between the two.. Yeah that would probably be enough, and Ranger 8.8s can be had for less the the Explorers. At least in my area they are sort of a hot commodity for Jeep swaps.

becareful with your 90 ranger was the change over for the pinion flange, so if you got the old 2.5 spacing flange on the 7.5 it your Ds wont bolt up to the 8.8 which has the 3' bolt spacing, the ranger 8.8 will be direct bolt up, the exploder you got to relocate the shock and spring perches, also 91-94 are drum and 95-01 8.8 are disc brakes

i was under the impression that the L/S carriers were supposedly weak on the 8.8, not the open carriers. i swore i read that on here somewhere (long ago).

i have no evidence to support this though, except i havent broken anything in my 31-spl 8.8 (open carrier, powertrax no-slip, 4.56s, 33s).. and i break a lot of stuff.. :bawling:

From what I've gathered it's the L/S carriers that are stronger......

4x4Junkie, usually recomends the full replacement carrier.....

Do believe I've seen a couple threads on broken carriers over on the explorer forums.

In theory the LS carrier is weaker because there's less "meat" since it's carved out for the clutches.

None of the 8.8" carriers are particularly strong, but the L/S ones do seem to be weaker than open ones.

The 7.5 carriers aren't anything to write home about either, so if you haven't broke a carrier (or spiders), then it might not matter as much (the 8.8s are still stronger than 7.5s).

Pretty sure all FX4 Rangers (those with the 31 spline Torsen axle) had 4.10 gears, not 4.56.

thats what i thought too until another member on here enlightened me. the axle codes page of the tech library seems to support the idea.

It was a FX4 with the Torsen?

i dont recall if it was a l/s or not. i was just surprised to learn a 31 spline/8.8/4.56 combo came stock.
