Making sure it is installed correctly, mostly. That there are no errors in the sprocket keyways or pin. To a lesser extent, you can move the intake opening point around for tuning purposes if you have a multi-index sprocket.

It really depend on if you want to spend the time getting every thing set up for maximum performance but this is not necessary unless building a race motor...

Not really. The timing might be a few degrees off from the machining process, but unless you're squeezing everything you can out of the engine, it doesn't really matter. I guess it would if it's an interference engine, and even then it'd have to be fairly far out.

I just helped a friend put a new cam in his J10's 258. We never bothered degreeing it. Fired right up, broke it in, and has put a good 6000 miles on it since. No issues.
